DURHAM, N.C. - Five Duke University track and field athletes won individual titles Sunday as the Blue Devils wrapped up the Duke Twilight, the second of two home meets this season, this evening at Wallace Wade Stadium.
Chris Rowland and Cydney Ross in the 800-meters, Amy Fryt in the pole vault, Esther Vermeer in the 1,500-meters and Juliet Bottorff in the 5,000-meters all won their respective events on the day.
Rowland's time of 1:52.55 was tops in the field, which included two fellow Devils in Sean-Pat Oswald (5th, 1:54.14) and Drew Hickey (18th, 1:57.48). On the women's side, Ross posted a personal best time to claim the title as her mark is also the No. 4 all-time performance at Duke. Leslie Morrison came in second in 2:09.10, while Katie Apinbunyopas placed sixth in 2:14.93.
Fryt led a 1-2-3 finish for Duke in the pole vault, clearing 12-feet 9 ¼-inches for her fourth first-place finish of the year. Cassie Ludwig placed second with a jump of 12-feet 1 ½-inches for second and Emily Mattoon placed third with a leap of 11-feet, 9 ¾-inches.
In the 1,500-meters, Vermeer ran a 4:23.21 to earn her second win of the season. Vermeer also claimed the 1,500-meter individual crown at the Duke Invitational on April 3. Emily Sherrard (5th, 4:29.24), Emily Schwitzer (8th, 4:32.09) and Anna Farias-Eisner (10th, 4:32.44) all finished in the top 10 as well.
One the men's side, Joshua Lund led the Blue Devils to a 2-3-4 finish, coming in second in the 1,500-meters in 3:46.83. Ken Sullivan came in third in 3:47.83 and James Kostelnik took fourth in 3:48.49.
Juliet Bottorff and Amanda Truelove ended the day, finishing first and second in the 5,000-meters with 16:24.13 and 16:55.04 times, respectively.
The Blue Devils travel next to the IC4A/ECAC Championships from May 14-16 in Princeton, N.J.
