PRINCETON, N.J./ATLANTA - Eight Blue Devils garnered All-East recognition as the Duke track and field programs opened a packed weekend schedule Friday evening at both the IC4A/ECAC Championships in Princeton, N.J. and the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta.
Emily Schwitzer turned in a top-eight performance in Duke's first event at the ECAC Championships, hosted by Princeton University, as the junior finished the steeplechase in 10:28.84. For the men, Ryan McDermott earned his second straight steeplechase All-East distinction, clocking a personal-best 8:51.27 to take third.
Next up, Katelyn Bastert finished the 5,000-meters in 16:49.49 to claim sixth place, while teammate Amanda Truelove clocked 17:09.15 for 16th. James Kostelnik and Bo Waggoner finished seventh and eighth, respectively, on the men's side as both added outdoor All-East accolades to their resumes. In addition, Kostelnik's time of 14:09.31 is the best performance in the 5,000-meters by a Blue Devil this season and the No. 5 all-time performance at Duke.
Sophia Ziemian posted a 35:59.26 in the 10,000-meters to finish third, and Josh Brewer ran 30:38.51 in the men's event to place second, Duke's highest individual finish at the Championships. Brewer's time of 30:38.51 is also tops for Duke this season. Andrew Brodeur (30:45.99) and James Osborne (30:55.32) rounded out the Duke contingent, placing fourth and ninth, respectively.
In Atlanta, Cory Nanni led all Duke runners with a fifth-place effort in the 1,500m run, clocking 3:42.68. Ken Sullivan (3:45.89) and Joshua Lund (3:45.98) also represented Duke and finished in 12th and 13th.
For the women, four Duke runners competed in the 1,500-meters with Leslie Morrison leading the way in seventh place after a 4:26.05 showing. Anna Farias-Eisner (4:29.39) and Suejin Ahn (4:29.68) finished 13th and 14th, while Emily Sherrard (4:41.91) came in 23rd.
Kristina Krasich represented Duke in the steeplechase, clocking 10:35.47 for third place.
Duke will compete at day two of the Georgia Tech Invitational today before the Devil field athletes head to North Carolina A&T for the Carolina Qualifier Sunday, May 16.
