GREENSBORO, N.C. - Duke women's track and field athlete Carly Seymour has advanced to the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., and headlined a solid day of competition for the Blue Devils at the Eastern Preliminary Round Friday evening at North Carolina A&T's Irwin Belk Track. Four more Blue Devils - Cory Nanni, Devotia Moore, Cydney Ross and Kate Van Buskirk - also qualified for the quarterfinals and will race for the chance to travel to Oregon for their respective events later this weekend.
Seymour, a native of Ebensburg, Pa., covered the 10,000m race in 34:58.37, the top time by a Blue Devil this season, to finish in seventh place in the field of 48. The top 12 competitors advanced to the NCAA Championships, hosted by the University of Oregon, June 9-12.
Moore and Ross continued Duke's success on the track as both runners will compete in the 800m quarterfinals set for 6:45 p.m., tomorrow, Friday, May 28. Ross clocked a personal-best 2:05.81, the No. 2 all-time performance by a Blue Devil, to finish third in Heat 2. Moore also took third in her heat, running 2:07.08 to advance. In addition, Leslie Morrison finished sixth in Heat 1, running 2:09.57. Only the top three finishers in each heat qualified for the quarterfinals as well as the next six fastest times.
Van Buskirk, an All-ACC performer earlier this season, is set for the women's 1,500m quarterfinals Saturday, May 29 at 6:45 p.m. The senior from Brampton, Ontario posted a 4:24.42 time to take fifth in her heat. Esther Vermeer clocked 4:28.93 in the event to finish eighth in Heat 2.
In the men's 1,500m, Nanni will represent Duke Saturday, May 29 at 6:30 p.m. after finishing fifth in his heat. The Bloomington, Ill., native turned in a 3:48.29 performance to move on to the quarterfinals as the top five from each heat advanced in addition to the next four fastest times in both the men's and women's races. In addition to Nanni, Joshua Lund and Ken Sullivan competed in the 1,500m, clocking 3:50.92 and 3:53.31, respectively.
The day began with the women's javelin throw as rookie Andrea Hopkins recorded a 135-foot, 7-inch mark to place 25th overall. Continuing with the field events, Tony Shirk tied for 38th place after clearing 15-feet, 9-inches in the pole vault.
Eastern Preliminary Round action continues tomorrow, starting at 10 a.m. with the men's javelin and concluding at 9:10 p.m. with the women's 3,000m steeplechase as eight Blue Devils are set to compete on day two. Live results will be available through www.flashresults.com.
