RALEIGH, N.C. - Tarran Senay and Matt Bergquist combined for six hits and three RBI out of the eight and nine spots in the order to lead NC State to an 8-4 win over Duke in the series finale on Saturday afternoon at Doak Field.
Both Senay and Bergquist went 3-for-4 while Senay doubled twice and Bergquist, a freshman shortstop, wrapped up a three-game series in which he went 5-for-13 and played errorless defense.
NC State (36-20, 15-15 ACC) benefited from a six-run third inning that included back-to-back RBI hits from Tarran and Bergquist. The Wolfpack then used five different relievers to preserve the lead and hand the Blue Devils (29-27, 8-22 ACC) a loss in their final game of the 2010 season. Despite the loss, Duke concludes 2010 with its fourth straight winning season under fifth-year head coach Sean McNally.
Duke senior Jeremy Gould ended his four-year career with a bang, tagging homers in his first two at bats for his first career multi-home run game. Gould finished with three RBI in his senior finale and concludes his Duke career ranked 11th all-time at Duke in batting average (.331), tied for fifth in doubles (55), 12th in hits (248) and tied for 14th in home runs (18).
Duke got a combined five shutout relief innings from freshman right-hander Chase Bebout and senior righty Jonathan Foreman. At that point, the Wolfpack had already staked an 8-1 lead, however, and used their bullpen to hold Duke to just one run over the final four innings. Wolfpack reliever Ethan Ogburn (2-0) notched the win with a two-inning appearance in place of starter Felix Roque, who scattered two hits and a run over three innings.
NC State took a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning against Duke starter Dennis O'Grady (2-5), thanks to an RBI triple from Dallas Poulk and a sacrifice fly from Drew Poulk. The Blue Devils quickly got one of those runs back in the top of the second, however, when Gould launched a solo home run in his first at bat. Gould's blast came on a full count and was the sixth homer of the season for the senior first baseman.
The Wolfpack blew the game open in the bottom of the third, however, and scored six runs to take an 8-1 lead. NC State tagged six hits during that frame, including a pair of two-run doubles from Maynard and Senay. Three of NC State's hits in that inning came with two strikes.
The Blue Devils quickly responded in their next turn, as Gould cracked his second homer of the game to the same spot in left field. The second blast of the game for Gould was a two-run shot that followed a one-out single by junior shortstop Jake Lemmerman. The blast came off of Ogburn, who took the mound in the start of the fourth inning. Duke would also go to its bullpen in the bottom of the fourth to bright in Bebout, who opened his 12th appearance of the year with a scoreless fourth inning.
Bebout posted two more shutout innings in the fifth and sixth, but got no more run support from his offense as NC State maintained an 8-3 lead. The Wolfpack used four relievers after Ogburn left the game in the fifth, including Anthony Tzamtzis and Vance Williams who both threw scoreless frames in the sixth and seventh.
The Blue Devils finally got to the NC state bullpen in the top of the eight and scored a run on a bases-loaded infield single by Lemmerman, but had the rally stifled when Alex Sogard rolled an inning-ending double play. Foreman then took the mound for Duke in the top of the ninth and retired the side in order in the final pitching appearance of his career.
The Wolfpack used one last reliever in the ninth, calling on Rob Chamra to close out the 8-4 win. Chamra used 13 pitches to retire the side in order and end Duke's season in the process.
Sunday's loss marks the end of the 2010 season for the Blue Devils. The Blue Devils posted their fourth straight winning season and just missed reaching 30 wins for the third straight year by one victory.
