Fryt Claims Second ACC Pole Vault Championship

CLEMSON, S.C. - Amy Fryt claimed her second-straight ACC pole vault crown Saturday afternoon as the Duke women's track and field team earned its best finish in program history, coming in fifth at the 2010 ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the Rock Norman Track Complex on the campus of Clemson University.

Fryt won her second straight pole vault championship with a jump of 13 feet 1.5 inches (4.00m). The Goldsboro, N.C., native's performance gives Duke four pole vault champions, which ties Florida State for the league record since 1998 when the event was added to the championship slate.

Led by Fryt's first-place effort on day three, the Devil women totaled 61 points for fifth place, a significant improvement over 2009's 11th-place showing. Clemson, who also won the indoor team title, scored 177 points for the team championship. The Duke men ended the weekend in eighth place with 38 points as Florida State won the team title with 138.50 points.

"Overall, our first two days were nearly flawless," director of track and field Norm Ogilvie said. "Our last day, we didn't perform quite as well as we had hoped, but we're still very proud of the overall team effort. The wind was incredibly strong, up to 30 mph gusts, but the kids still competed really hard. The depth in the women's distances was fantastic and Amy Fryt was clearly the best women's pole vaulter in the conference."

Duke placed four runners in the top nine of the women's 800-meters, led by Cydney Ross in fourth place with a 2:08.92 clocking. Devotia Moore ran 2:10.18 to take sixth, followed by Esther Vermeer (2:12.22) and Leslie Morrison (2:14.50) in eight and ninth place, respectively.

For the men, Sean-Pat Oswald finished seventh in the 800-meters with a time of 1:52.17.

Kate Van Buskirk added to her career resume with All-ACC honors in the 1,500-meters Saturday. The Brampton, Ontario native took third place in 4:32.07 for her second all-conference honors in the event. An All-ACC cross country performer this past fall, Van Buskirk is one of six Blue Devil women's athletes to earn all-league accolades in cross country, indoor and outdoor track, joining Clara Horowitz, Maddie McKeever, Shannon Rowbury, Laura Stanley and Liz Wort.

On the men's side, Cory Nanni placed fourth in 4:00.39, while Joshua Lund (4:01.73) and Ken Sullivan placed ninth and 10th, respectively.

Between both the men's and women's team, Duke placed five student-athletes in the top-10 of the 5,000-meters. For the women, Juliet Bottorff (16:55.11), Suejin Ahn (16:57.83) and Katelyn Bastert (17:10.82) finished 5-6-7 as Andrew Brodeur (14:32.94) and Bo Waggoner (14:34.22) represented the men.

Both the men's and women's most valuable performer of the championships will be selected by a vote of the head coaches and announced on Friday, April 23.
