Austin Takes Home ACC Title in Javelin

CLEMSON, S.C. - Two Blue Devils, John Austin and Austin Gamble, earned All-ACC honors as Duke got off to a very strong start at the 2010 ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships Thursday at the Rock Norman Track Complex on the campus of Clemson University.

The Devil men are in second place with 16 points at the conclusion of day one, while the women are tied for third with 11 points. The Virginia men with 25 points and the Clemson women with 29 points currently lead all teams.

Austin, an All-America honoree in 2008, won the javelin throw with a toss of 225 feet (68.58m) to become the third Blue Devil, and first since Mike Curtis in 1963, to win the javelin title. The Mechanicsburg, Pa., native broke the Duke record, which he himself set in 2008, earlier this season with a throw of227 feet 3 inches.

Gamble, another Duke record holder, did not fail to disappoint in the discus throw, taking third place to earn the first All-ACC honors of his career. The rookie set the school record of 175 feet 4 inches in his first competition earlier this season, then surpassed that mark today with a throw of 179 feet 5 inches.

On the women's side, three Devils placed in the top 10 in the javelin, led by Amy Matulewicz in seventh with a toss of 140 feet 8 inches. Andrea Hopkins finished eighth with a throw of 138 feet 9 inches and Shannon Sullivan came in tenth with a 132-foot 3-inch performance.

In the 10,000-meters, Carly Seymour narrowly missed All-ACC accolades, finishing fourth in 35:05.05. Kayla Hale placed sixth with a 35:26.74 clocking, while Amanda Truelove rounded out the Duke top-10 contingent in ninth place with a time of 35:57.33. Sophia Ziemian came in 14^th, running 37:06.70.

James Osborne led all Blue Devils with an eleventh-place effort in the men's 10,000-meters, clocking 30:44.69. Andrew Brodeur followed just behind in 12^th-place, running 30:51.48 and Josh Brewer placed 15^th with a 30:54.79 showing.

The second day of the three-day meet begins tomorrow at 10 a.m. with the remainder of the heptathlon and decathlon. The women's long jump and men's shot put begin at 11 a.m. with the men's long jump and women's shot put following at 2 p.m. Preliminary running events start at 3 p.m. Day two concludes with the men's and women's 3,000m steeplechase at 6:45 and 7:15 p.m., respectively.
