CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - In its final meet before the ACC Championships, the Duke track and field program had several strong showings at the Joe Hilton Carolina Fast Times, hosted by North Carolina.
Two Devil pole vaulters posted personal records on Saturday afternoon, starting with Tony Shirk, who finished third overall. Shirk's jump of 5.05m (16-6.75), a personal high, is also tied for the No. 3 all-time record at Duke. Not to be outdone, Amy Fryt set a personal record with a jump of 4.10m (13-5.25) to take first on the women's side. In addition, the Greensboro, N.C., native's mark is the Blue Devils' No. 2 all-time record.
Saturday's results were highlighted by the men's 1,500m run as well with 10 Devils taking part on the men's side. Cory Nanni led the way for Duke with a second-place effort. The junior's time of 3:42.07 was not only a personal best but also the No. 4 all-time performance at Duke. Ryan McDermott ran 3:42.77 for 1,500 meters to finish in fifth place while climbing to No. 5 all-time in school history in the event.
The ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships begin Thursday, April 15 and continue through Saturday, April 17. The conference championships, hosted by Clemson, will be held at the university's Rock Norman Track and Field Complex.
