Duke remained close with eventual tournament winners and host team North Florida, before the Ospreys were able to pull away, going four-under-par as a team on the back nine to end at 876 (+12). Weather conditions did prove to be a factor, as strong gusts picked up in the late afternoon.
"It is a learning experience; I think we made some good strides this week," head coach Jamie Green said. "Our goal is to play as well as we can possibly play and today we came up short of that. We learned about ourselves and it will be a great opportunity to see what other improvements we can make."
Adam Long led the way for Duke with rounds of 72-73-76=221 (+5) to finish in a tie for 13th. The senior from St. Louis, Mo., secured his highest finish this season and now has 23 career top 20 finishes.
Junior Wes Roach and freshman Adam Sumrall both tied for 18th. Roach fired rounds of 74-75-75=224 (+8) and moved up five sports on the individual leaderboard in the final round. Sumrall recorded rounds of 74-73-77=224 (+8) to join Long and Roach in the top 20. A native of South Bend, Ind., Sumrall now has two career top 20s in five collegiate tournaments.
Spencer Anderson, a sophomore from Pacific Palisades, Calif., ended his tournament in a tie for 21st with rounds of 74-75-76=225 (+9). Freshman Julian Suri, who hails from nearby St. Augustine, Fla., tied for 38th after recording rounds of 80-70-78=228 (+12).
"We will focus on what we can improve and some of the things we did well," Green said. "We will be back in this position again and that is something I know we are looking forward to."
Along with winning the team title, North Florida's Joe Byun topped the individual leaderboard with a final score of 212 (-4). Byun was the only golfer under-par through three rounds of play.
"We did have a lot of great golf shots and when our short games are really sharp, it is going to make a difference down the road no matter what tournament we play in," Green added.
Duke will return to action on March 14-15 at the General Hackler Championship, held in Murrells Inlet, S.C. at TPC Myrtle Beach.
