MURRELLS INLET, S.C. - Duke fired scores of 309-297 at the TPC Myrtle Beach to place seventh after two rounds of play at the General Hackler Championship today. The Blue Devils have three players in the top 20 of the individual leaderboard heading into final-round play tomorrow.
Due to wet conditions, lift clean and place was in effect for the tournament. Gusting winds also was a challenge throughout the day.
"Certainly as a whole, today didn't work out as we would have liked or like we had planned," head coach Jamie Green said. "But great teams and great players have the wisdom to breakdown their rounds and find ways to improve. Our guys will do that, determining precisely what they would have done differently. We can't change the past, but we can become stronger because of it if we choose to. Tomorrow will be a fun challenge - this is a great golf course."
Senior Adam Long carded rounds of 76-74=150 (+6) to end the first day in 17th place. The native of St. Louis, Mo., birded the par-4 10th and the par-5 18th to reach two-over-par in his second round.
Following Long were freshmen Brinson Paolini and Julian Suri, who both sit in a tie for 18th place. Paolini shot a team-best 73 in the second round to go along with his first round 78 for a combined score of 151 (+7). Suri recorded rounds of 77-74=151 (+7) to join Paolini in 18th place. Suri was two-under-par on the back nine of the second round.
Junior Wes Roach is tied for 33rd after rounds of 78-76=154 (+10). A product of Knoxville, Tenn., Roach notched four birdies in his second round.
Spencer Anderson sits in a tie for 50th after rounds of 81-77=158 (+14). Freshman Adam Sumrall, playing as an individual, posted rounds of 80-81=161 (+17).
"In many cases our players played with patience and determination," Green said. "We did see some bad breaks, and yes, there were a few not-so-great decisions. However, our team is resilient and I expect nothing but committed, confident play tomorrow. They have great talent to match this course."
East Tennessee St. leads the General Hackler Championship after two rounds with a team score of 294-293=587 (+11). Seamus Power of East Tennessee St. leads the individual tournament at four-under-par with rounds of 69-71=140 (-4).
