PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - In their last matches before the Atlantic/South Regionals, four Duke fencers posted winning records at the Temple Invitational, including a perfect 9-0 showing from sophomore and defending NCAA Women's Saber Champion Becca Ward.
Ward's 9-0 mark pushed her season record to 69-1 and put her on a 21-bout winning streak heading into the regional competition on Saturday, March 13. Joining Ward with winning marks were men's saber Anthony Lin (4-2) and women's foils Keara Mageras (6-3) and Lily Shepard (5-4).
The Duke women knocked off No. 6 St. John's with a 14-13 victory to finish 1-2 at the Temple Invitational. The Duke men dropped a pair of showdowns with No. 2 Penn State and No. 5 St. John's, both by scores of 16-11.
Shepard helped the Duke women's foil squad take down the No. 2 Penn State women's foils 5-4 by sweeping all three of her bouts. Mageras also chipped in two wins, including the ninth-bout clincher.
Following the March 13 Atlantic/South Regionals, the qualifying Blue Devils will venture to the 2010 NCAA Championships on March 25-28.
