CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Rachael Moss put down four service aces and nine kills to lead Duke to a 3-0 (25-23, 25-14, 25-16) sweep over Boston College Sunday afternoon in Power Gymnasium.
A senior outside hitter, Moss also collected a team-high 17 digs to move into fourth place on Duke's all-time digs list with 1,319. Her all-around effort led the Blue Devils (13-2, 3-0 ACC) to their fifth straight win and third sweep over an ACC opponent. Duke has yet to lose a set to an ACC team this season.
Duke totaled 10 service aces in the win with three coming from libero Claire Smalzer, two from setter Kellie Catanach and one more from freshman defensive specialist Nailah Waterfield. On the defensive end, the Blue Devils gave up just three aces to Boston College (10-4, 0-3 ACC) which entered the match with a conference-best 85 aces.
Boston College managed to hold Duke to a .186 hitting percentage, despite allowing both Moss (.318) and freshman Christiana Gray (.429) hit over .300. Gray finished with seven kills on 14 attacks, but was even more effective defensively with six blocks. Two of those were solo stops, giving the 6-5 middle blocker 42 blocks on the season.
Duke also got eight kills from junior Becci Burling and five apiece from sophomore Sophia Dunworth and freshman Megan Hendrickson. Each of those three also chipped in blocks to contribute to Duke's eight team stops.
Taylor Williams provided the majority of the Eagle offense with 10 kills on 31 attacks. Duke held her to a .196 hitting percentage, however, while forcing Boston College to hit .072 as a team. The sub-.100 hitting percentage marks the third consecutive match in which Duke has held an opponent under .100.
Boston College had trouble stopping Burling in the first set, letting five of her six attacks hit the floor. But despite falling behind by as much as six points at 15-9, the Eagles rallied to tie the match at 23-23 with a late 6-2 run. The Blue Devils, however, regained the momentum when an attack by Krystle Higgins went wide for an error, setting up Smalzer for a set-clinching service ace, which was her third of the opening frame.
Duke opened up the offense in the second set, hitting .293 with just four attack errors to claim a 25-14 win. Hendrickson led the way with four kills, while Burling, Moss and Gray each finished with four. Gray went 3-for-4 without an error while chipping in two blocks alongside Catanach. Duke opened up the game with an 11-3 run that led to a 20-9 lead.
Moss took over in the final set, dropping in three service aces while connecting on five of her eight attacks to lead Duke to the 25-16 win. Moss accounted for eight Duke points while also picking up four digs to help hold the Eagles to a -.028 clip.
Duke will return to Cameron Indoor Stadium for a two-match homestand against Virginia on Friday, Oct. 2, and against Virginia Tech on Saturday, Oct. 3. Both matches will begin at 7 p.m.
