MURRELLS INLET, S.C. -- Sophomore Wes Roach shot a two-under 70 to lead Duke to an 11-over 299 in the final round of the General Jim Hackler Championship on Monday. The Blue Devils finished 11th overall with a 915 (+51). at the challenging TPC of Myrtle Beach.
"We got off to a good start today but one through five we didn't finish as strong as we would have liked," said head coach Jamie Green. "There are a lot of positives to take from this round, but there is more work to be done."
Wake Forest won the team title with a +17, 881, while North Carolina State's Matt Hill claimed individual medalist honors with a three-under 213.
Roach recorded five birdies, 10 pars and three bogeys en route to one of seven under-par rounds on Monday. The Knoxville, Tenn., native closed the tournament tied for 39th with a +14, 230.
"Wes Roach's round today from tee to green was one of the best ball striking rounds of year for this teams," said Green. "He really gave himself a lot of opportunities on a difficult and challenging course that didn't yield many under-par rounds on the day."
Junior Adam Long finished tied for 24th with a 10-over 226. He had five-over 77 in the final round to post his fourth top 25 finish of the season. Long has also recorded a counting team score in all 18 rounds this season.
Michael Quagliano, a senior from Ardsley, N.Y., had a strong closing round with a one-over 73. He carded three birdies, 11 pars and four bogeys on the day to end the event tied for 51st with a 17-over 233.
"Michael [Quagliano] had a solid round today," said Green. "He putted well and responded to each bad break on the course. This was a nice bounce-back round for him."
Freshman Spencer Anderson also finished tied for 51st after shooting an eight-over 80 on Monday. Senior Clark Klaasen shot a seven-over 79 in the final round to tie for 62nd overall. He made the turn at even-par on Monday before suffering three double-bogeys on the closing nine holes of play.
Duke returns to action March 22-24 at the Callaway Collegiate Match Play in San Diego, Calif.
"We are going to keep working," added Green. "This team is looking forward to going out to California to compete in the Collegiate Match Play."
