RANCHO SANTA FE, CA ? Freshman Spencer Anderson shot a 76-75=151 (+7) to finish tied for 30th in the stroke play portion of the Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship on Sunday. As a team, Duke shot a 304-311=615 (+39) to finish 16th overall at the Farms Golf Club (par 72, 6,911 yards).
"It's tough to look at the leaderboard after today and feel that there were many positives," said head coach Jamie Green. "But there were spurts of good play from the guys and we hit some great shots and had some well played holes."
The Blue Devils will now face Arizona State on Monday in the consolation bracket of the team match play. Other consolation pairings include (10) San Diego vs. (15) UC Irvine, (11) Chattanooga vs. (14) Louisville and (12) Alabama vs. (13) Charlotte.
"The choice to start and remain positive will be key for our guys the rest of the way," added Green. "Going into match play tomorrow, I really like our chances for success. We have had some terrific play back in Durham in match play format during the last week of practice."
Anderson had three birdies in the morning session but also suffered four bogeys and a double en route to a 76. In the afternoon, he had four birdies and entered the final hole at one-under par before suffering a nine on the 555-yard, par 5 third hole.
"Spencer [Anderson] had great momentum going in the afternoon round in those windy conditions," said Green. "If not for a stumble on the last hole it would have been one of the better rounds of the tournament."
Senior Clark Klaasen shot an even-par 72 in the opening round of play. He had three birdies, 12 pars and three bogeys in the morning sesssion before shooting an eight-over 80 in the afternoon to finish tied for 36th.
"Clark's round in the morning was as solid as they come from start to finish," stated Green. "His energy and focus were terrific - he was having fun out there and it showed."
Wes Roach, a sophomore from Knoxville, Tenn., shot 78-76=154 (+10) to tie for 49th overall. Junior Adam Long was tied for 66th at +14 (78-80), while senior Michael Quagliano shot 83-81 on the day.
The Match Play portion of the event begins with an 8 a.m. shotgun start Monday, March 23. Complete results and live scoring at available at www.golfstat.com.
"The guys have been hitting some great shots and know they can make birdie on any hole they play," said Green. "That's the confidence we'll use to be successful Monday and Tuesday."
Indiana won the stroke play portion to claim the top seed in the championship bracket of the team match play. The Hoosiers shot 303-282=585 to win by three strokes over San Diego State and Florida State. Indiana's David Erdy claimed medalist honors at seven-under 137 (72-65).
