WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. ? Two Blue Devils ? Amy Matulewicz and Jade Ellis ? won their events today during day two of the 2009 Wake Forest Open at Kentner Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C. Matulewicz won the javelin with a throw of 150-05, which is second all-time at Duke and a personal-best by more than two feet, while Ellis won the long jump in 23-07.25.
Matulewicz's throw was an NCAA Regional qualifier as well as an ECAC standard. Ellis met the IC4A mark in his event as well.
“It was a solid outing for a season-opener,” said head coach Norm Ogilvie. “I'm very pleased with the way we competed overall. We have some work to do in some areas, but it was a good start and we look forward to the Raleigh Relays next weekend.”
In other field event news, Tony Shirk (15-01.00) and Sid Palas (14-07.25) went 3-4 in the pole vault. Michael Schallmo's 160-08 throw in the discus was good for third place overall there as well as IC4A qualifier. Also in the event, Tyler Clarke set a personal best 130-08 as he took second in his flight.
Taking to the track, the Blue Devils took second and seventh place in a large field in the 1500-meters, with Emily Schwitzer finishing second overall in 4:33.35 and freshman Esther Vermeer taking seventh in 4:35.66. Duke was then 2-4 in the 3,000, with Christy Adamyk taking second in a personal-best 9:53.09 and Mary Carleton Johnston finishing fourth in 10:13.40. Adamyk's time was an ECAC qualifier for the sophomore in just her first attempt this outdoor season.
On the men's side, Ken Sullivan was third in 8:33.30 for the 3K.
The final event of the day was the 4x400, where the Duke women took sixth in 3:52.76. Kelsey Ontko led off in 58.4, followed by Nicole Ragucci in 57.1 and Devotia Moore in 57.8. Esther Vermeer anchored in 59.3
The men's relay of Clarke (49.8), Caleb Duncanson (49.6), Sam Bowler (49.3), and Mario Moreno (50.5) were fifth in an overall time of 3:19.24. The men's ?B' team of Brad Troxell (51.8), Chris Rowland (50.3), Sean Pat Owsald (51.0), and Brendon Pierson (52.5) clocked an overall time of 3:25.63. It was the first race of Troxell's Blue Devil career.
Next on the slate for Duke will be the Raleigh Relays next weekend in Raleigh, N.C., as the Blue Devils remain close to home at the outset of the outdoor season.
