RALEIGH, N.C. ? Junior thrower Mike Schallmo broke the Duke record in the discus Friday morning, highlighting the Duke track & field teams' strong opening day performance at the Raleigh Relays at N.C. State's Paul Derr Stadium.
Schallmo's third-place toss of 170-2 broke the school record by over a foot and was an NCAA Regional qualifier as well as an IC4A qualifier for the Blue Devil.
Duke's first day on the track was highlighted by the team's victory in the men's 4x1500 meters, as the foursome of Stephen Clark (3:57.0), Ryan McDermott (3:50.3), Cory Nanni (3:48.1), and Bo Waggoner (3:53.1) took first overall in a total time of 15:28.45, the second-fastest all-time mark in Duke history. The relay defeated three ACC rivals in the field in Virginia, North Carolina, and Boston College.
Christy Adamyk ran a personal-best 16:55.42 in the 5000-meters, which was an ECAC mark and just off a regional qualifier.
In the men's shot put, Michael Barbas threw 52-7.5, putting him third all-time at Duke and securing an IC4A qualifying standard. Schallmo doubled back with another strong performance, joining his teammate with an IC4A mark as he threw 51-0.75.
Courtney Bowen turned in a seasonal best in the women's discus with a throw of 132-8.
Jade Ellis continued his solid track season with a fourth-place finish in the long jump, with a mark of 23-5.50.
