BLACKSBURG, Va. ? Today's competition featured only the multi-events, with Haraldsdottir breaking the Duke record and taking eighth to score in the pentathlon, and Clarke currently sitting in sixth place through four events of the heptathlon at Virginia Tech's Rector Field House.
“It was a successful first day for Duke,” said Director of Track & Field Norm Ogilvie. “We saw the best pentathlon of Karolina's career to date, and a very strong first-day showing for Tyler.”
Haraldsdottir's final score of 3,688 broke her own record of 3,436 set earlier this season and placed her in eighth place of 20 finishers to score a point for Duke. She started off with a personal-best in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.24 to score 860 points, followed by her pentathlon personal-best in the high jump with a leap of 5-6 to score 830 points.
In the shot put, she set a personal-best mark of 40-7 ? to score 686 points. Her long jump performance was Haraldsdottir's only non-best time as she leapt 17 ? for 614 points, leaving her with 2,990 heading into the final event, the 800-meters. Her time of 2:29.60 was good for 698 points as she was just 43 points out of seventh place in the event.
Her mark was an ECAC qualifier, giving her one more shot at an NCAA Provisional standard as she will compete next Sat., March 7, in Boston at ECACs. Today's score was just 12 short of the NCAA ?P' standard.
After day one of the heptathlon, with three events left, Clarke sits in sixth and just 16 points out of fifth through four events.
