PONTE VEDRA, FL ? The Duke men's golf team is 15th overall after shooting a 314 (+26) in the opening round of the John Hayt Invitational. Sophomore Wes Roach shot a team-low 76 (+4) at the Sawgrass Oceanside Course (par 72, 6,955 yards) in Ponte Vedra, Fla.
Arizona State leads the event after 18 holes of play with a two-over 290. LSU is six shots back after firing an eight-over 296 on Sunday. Georgia Southern and UAB are tied for third at +10 (298), while Tennessee and Georgia State are tied for fifth at 11-over (299). Arizona State's James Byrne holds the individual lead with a four-under 68. Zack Byrd (Coastal Carolina) and John Peterson (LSU) are tied for second at one-under, while five players are tied for fourth at even-par. Only seven players shot even-par or better in Sunday's opening round.
Roach had 14 pars and four bogeys on the day and is tied for 32nd with a 76. Junior Adam Long carded three birdies on the day but also had two double-bogeys and a triple-bogey en route to a five-over 77. He is tied for 42nd overall.
Senior Clark Klaasen is tied for 72nd after shooting an eight-over 80 in the opening round. Michael Quagliano (+9) and Spencer Anderson (+11) are tied for 77th and 81st through 18 holes of play. Sophomore Matthew Pierce, who is playing as an individual, is tied for 72nd as well after an eight-over 80 on Sunday.
Duke will open second round action on Monday beginning at 8:09 a.m. The Blue Devils will be paired with third-ranked Alabama and Furman. Live stats as well as complete results and statistics are available at www.golfstat.com.
