DURHAM, N.C. - In Tacoma, Wash., on Dec. 13,1986, the men's soccer team made history by defeating Akron, 1-0, winning Duke's first NCAA Championship for any sport. Coached by John Rennie, the 1986 triumph erased some of the sting from Duke's 2-1, eight overtime fall to Indiana in the 1982 title match and fulfilled the four-year dreams of 11 returning seniors to bring the championship trophy home.
One of those 11 seniors was current Duke head coach John Kerr, who after the championship game was named the recipient of the 1986 Hermann Trophy, given to the nation's top player. Kerr led the ACC in scoring that season, and during the game drew Akron's best defender Grahme Evison, who committed 11 fouls.
"Any time you are in a game like this, it will be physical," Kerr said back on championship day. "You're playing for all the marbles. They were told to go out and hit people, make every tackle 100 percent."
