Former Blue Devil John Harrell Passes Away

DURHAM, N.C. ? John Harrell, a point guard at Duke from 1977-79, passed away late Monday. Harrell, a native of Durham, N.C., was 50.

Harrell played in 63 career games, helping the Blue Devils to a 48-15 record including a 17-7 mark in conference play. He started 25 of 34 games and averaged 5.1 points per game in 1977-78 as Duke captured the ACC Tournament Championship and reached the finals of the NCAA Tournament.

Harrell began his college career at North Carolina Central, where he averaged 19.3 point per game and led the team in assists as a freshman before transferring to Duke. While at Durham Hillside High School, Harrell collected numerous accolades; including all-conference, all-metro, all-area, all-state and Coach & Athlete All-America honors.
