No. 9-ranked and No. 2-seeded Duke defeated No. 15-seeded Belmont, 71-70, on March 20, 2008, at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C., in the first round of the 2008 NCAA Tournament. Duke improves to 28-5 while Belmont finishes its season with a 25-9 mark.

Duke In The NCAA Tournament
- Duke is now 86-28 in the NCAA Tournament and snapped the school's two-game losing streak. Duke has only had three two-game losing streaks in its NCAA history and has never lost three straight in the tournament.
- Duke's 86 wins ranks fourth all-time behind Kentucky (98, losing today), North Carolina (92 entering tomorrow), and UCLA (90 with today's win).
- It was also Duke's 114th game in NCAA Tournament history, also ranking fourth behind the above mentioned teams (Kentucky 142, North Carolina 131 and UCLA 122 all counting their first round games).
- Duke is now 21-5 as a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
- With the win over the A-Sun champions, Duke has now defeated five conference champions this season.
- Since the 2000 tournament, Duke has played 28 games and won 21, both the most in the country. Kansas has 27 games played counting its first round game while Florida has 20 victories in 26 games for second on both those lists.

- Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski now has a 803-266 record in his 33rd season coaching overall. The 803 wins sets a new NCAA record for most wins in a coaches first 33 seasons, surpassing the previous mark of 802 by Dean Smith.
- Duke has hit a three-pointer in 652 consecutive games, the fourth-longest streak in the NCAA behind UNLV, Vanderbilt and Kentucky.

- Duke is now 215-118 all-time in March, including 127-52 under Coach K and 63-20 since 1997-98.
- Duke is now 8-3 all-time on March 20 in its history, including a 6-3 mark under Coach K and 7-2 mark in the NCAA Tournament on March 20 (the other two games and 1-1 mark were in NIT games).
Coach K
- Coach K is now 803-266 overall in 33 years of coaching, ranking sixth overall and second among active coaches for most wins in NCAA history. Fifth overall and the top active coach is Eddie Sutton with 804 wins. First overall is Coach K's mentor, Bob Knight, with 902 wins.
- Coach K is now 730-207 at Duke in 28 years, ranking sixth for most wins at one school in NCAA history. Fourth overall and tops among active coaches is Syracuse's Jim Boeheim with 769 wins there. Western Kentucky's Ed Diddle is fifth with 759 wins for the Hilltoppers.
Greg Paulus
- The junior scored 12 points, hitting a pair of threes and 4-of-6 from the line. He grabbed five rebounds in 34 minutes, as well.
- Paulus became the 56th player in Duke history to surpass the 1,000 point plateau. He now has 1,004 and is just one point behind 55th place Rick Kathermann (1,005 from 1969-71).
- Paulus has now hit a three-pointer in 17 straight games, 32 of 33 this season and 60 of his last 64 dating back to his sophomore season.
- Paulus has now hit multiple threes in 23 games this season.
- Paulus now has 170 career triples and remained in 10th place in Duke history. Immediately ahead is Mike Dunleavy with 179 from 2000-02.

Jon Scheyer
- The sophomore scored 13 points, connecting on a three pointer and hitting 6-of-7 from the line. He added five rebounds, three steals and two assists.
- Scheyer now has 22games scoring in double figures this season and 45 such games in his career.
- Scheyer now has four games this season with three-plus steals and eight such games in his career.
Gerald Henderson
- The sophomore scored 21 points including the game-winning lay-up with 11.9 seconds remaining. He hit 8-of-14 from the field and all four of his free throws. He added seven rebounds, a career-high tying five steals and two assists in 32 minutes.
- Henderson now has 24 games scoring in double figures and 31 such games in his career.
