DURHAM, N.C.?Duke University junior Josh Bienenfeld was named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America Men's Soccer First Team the organization announced on Nov. 19. Bienenfeld is the first Duke men's soccer player to capture first-team Academic All-America honors in the program's history and the fourth to earn the recognition from the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Bienenfeld is one of two athletes from the Atlantic Coast Conference to earn the honor this year and joins 2008 graduate Michael Videira as one of two juniors in Duke soccer history to be selected to a CoSIDA Academic All-America team. The native of Huntingdon Valley, Pa., advanced to the national ballot after earning Academic All-District III first-team recognition. To be eligible for nomination at the District level, a student must be at least a sophomore, a starter or key reserve on his or her team, and maintain a cumulative 3.30 grade point average on a scale of 4.00.
A psychology major, Bienenfeld has started all 19 games for the Blue Devils this season. He sees action in both the midfield and at defense and currently ranks fourth on the team in minutes played. He tallied a goal against Harvard this year to help the Blue Devils beat the Crimson to win the Duke/Nike Classic.
Bienenfeld is a two-year starter, getting the nod in 34 of the previous 39 contests. He started 15 contests in 2007 and registered three assists. As a rookie, Bienenfeld came off the bench to score a goal and an assist and help Duke capture the ACC Tournament title and advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals. For his career, he has played in all 62 games over the past three seasons, tallying two goals and four assists for eight points.
Bienenfeld is equally impressive off the field. He has been selected to the Distinguished Dean's List three times and to the Dean's List all four semesters. A two-time All-Academic ACC honoree, Bienenfeld currently ranks in the top two percent of his class at Duke. He collaborated with teammates and others from North Carolina Central University to organize MLK Meals for Millions in 2007 and served as a volunteer in physical education classes for George Watts Elementary School in 2006.
The Blue Devils are 10-7-2 this season and continue postseason play on Friday, Nov. 21 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Duke kicks off against UNC Greensboro at 7 p.m., at Koskinen Stadium. Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for students and seniors, and $1 for children under five.
