DURHAM, N.C. ? The Duke women's cross country team defended its team title at the Murray Keatinge Invitational Saturday afternoon, winning the event for the second year in a row at the University of Maine in Orono, Maine.
The Blue Devils placed all of its scorers in the top 20 individually, taking first in the field of seven teams with a score of 46 points. The Blue Devils were led by senior Molly Lehman's fourth place finish, covering the 5K run in 18:11.34. She was followed closely by senior Amanda Patterson in fifth overall, running 18:13.05 in the field of 88 runners.
A trio of freshmen rounded out the Duke scoring on the day, as Allison Damon took eighth in 18:19.28, Virginia Hine was 11th in 18:24.99, and Mary Carleton Johnston finished 18th in 18:33.26.
Duke's other finishers on the day were freshman Esther Vermeer in 22nd (18:39.49), sophomore Devotia Moore in 46th (19:16.11), and freshman Leslie Morrison in 51st (19:27.81).
Duke finished ahead of the pack and picked up six wins on the day, leading Boston College (54 points), Yale (74), New Hampshire (84), Dartmouth (103), Maine-Orono (161), and Holy Cross (175).
The men's squad was also in action Saturday, racing four athletes at the Hagan Stone Classic in Greensboro, N.C. The men did not collect a team score on the day, but did place all four athletes in the top 25, and two in the top 10.
Freshman Johns Ross led the way with his 8K time of 25:56 to take second overall. Ross was followed by fellow freshman Guillermo Echarte in fifth (26:09.8), Isaac Dunkelberger in 14th (26:50.4), and Kevin McDermott in 22nd (27:16.5) in the 25-team field.
Ross was in contention for the individual victory but got out-kicked in the final 30 meters, as Duke saw two of its newcomers finish 2-5 in the strong field.
The women's squad also saw four runners compete at the Hagan Stone, as Rachel Provost took 18th in the 5K women's race in 19:57.5, followed by Cydney Ross in 25th (20:07.0), Priya Khatri in 27th (20:08.9), and Katie Apibunyopas in 33rd (20:26.9).
Both squads will take this week off from racing and return to action on Friday, Oct. 17, as the women travel to State College, Pa., for the Penn State Invitational and the men compete in Boone, N.C., at the Blue Ridge Open.
