STATE COLLEGE, Pa. ? The Duke women's cross country team, ranked 28th nationally and third in the Southeast Region, turned in a fourth-place performance out of 28 teams Friday morning at the Penn State National meet on the campus of the Nittany Lions.
The Duke women were fourth with a team score of 154, behind No. 7 West Virginia (40), host No. 20 Penn State (83), and No. 25 Wake Forest (136). The Mountaineers won the meet for the second year in a row with runners in second and third place individually.
“It was a pretty good meet for us,” said Duke head coach Kevin Jermyn. “But we feel we need to slide everybody up 20 seconds or so to be where we are capable of being.”
Leading the Blue Devils for the second time this season was freshman Carly Seymour, who also finished first for Duke at the Roy Griak Invitational. Seymour took 11th place overall, running the 6K course in 21:01.
“Carly had a strong second race,” said Jermyn. “She did a great job of chasing some of the top runners in the country.”
Behind Seymour, sophomore Emily Schwitzer was 32nd, coming in at 21:23. Freshman Suejin Ahn turned in a strong performance, placing third for Duke and 33rd overall in 21:24, right behind Schwitzer. Rounding out the Blue Devil scorers were sophomore Christy Adamyk in 40th (21:32) and senior captain Anna Farias-Eisner in 43rd (21:42).
Seniors Molly Lehman and Patricia Loughlin came in at 48th (21:48) and 58th (21:55), respectively.
The team was without a top contributor in junior Kate Van Buskirk, who sat out due to tightness in her calf, but was still able to post an impressive spread of just 41 seconds.
