DURHAM, N.C. ? Danielle Hepburn put down 18 kills at a .471 hitting percentage to lead the Clemson volleyball team to a 3-1 (16-25, 25-18, 25-25, 25-19) win over Duke Saturday evening in Jervey Gym.
Hepburn also put back a team-high six blocks and made just two attack errors on the night to lead a trio of Tigers who surpassed 10 kills. Along with a 15-for-30 effort from Jeanette Abbott, Clemson (13-5, 5-2 ACC) hit .357 against the Blue Devils (13-6, 4-3 ACC) to inch closer to the top spot in the ACC standings.
Lia Proctor also contributed 14 kills for the Tigers, who made just 12 attack errors on the night to outpace a pair of 13-kill efforts from Duke's Becci Burling and Sophia Dunworth. Dunworth, a freshman middle blocker and outside hitter, matched a career-high with a .500 hitting percentage after making just two errors on her 22 attacks.
Despite their offensive efforts, Duke had a difficult time getting past Clemson's block as the Tigers put back 10 of Duke's attacks to hold the Blue Devils to a .195 hitting percentage. Brittany Fennell and Abbott each had three stops, while libero Didem Ege chipped in a team-high 14 digs. Duke nearly made up for it in serving, as they hammered seven service aces with three each coming from freshman Amanda Robertson and junior Rachael Moss. Clemson was able to almost match that performance, however, and got three aces from Ege and two more from Proctor to close the gap.
Clemson hit no less than .300 in any set while holding Duke to a sub-.300 clip in all but one frame. Duke came out swinging and hit .576 in the first set with 19 kills compared to just two errors, but could not overcome Clemson's adjustments after the first frame and hit .223 for the remainder of the match.
Despite the loss, Duke remains among the top five in the ACC standings and will have another shot to climb the ranks next weekend as the Blue Devils head to Virginia and Virginia Tech on Oct. 17-18. Duke will face the Cavaliers at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 17, and the Hokies at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18.
