SACRAMENTO, Calif. --- On the first day of the NCAA outdoor track and field championships, senior Elizabeth Wort and sophomore Maddie McKeever made their presence known. Each qualified for the finals in their respective events: the 3,000 meter steeplechase and the 5,000 meter run. McKeever's performance also broke a 29-year-old school record.
Wort ran the steeplechase in 10:01.04, which was the fourth-fastest preliminary time at the NCAA's. She will have a chance to compete in the finals on Friday at 10:25 EST. Wort is the school record holder in the steeplechase with her time of 9:52.34, which won her Duke's first NCAA East Regional title on May 26.
McKeever was good for a 16:05.50 clocking in the 5,000m prelims on Wednesday, which was the third-best time on the day. That time was good for the all-time Duke record in the event, breaking the record set in 1978 by former Blue Devil Ellison Goodall by over two-and-a-half seconds.
Junior Lara Jones saw her season come to an end on Wednesday in the pole vault. Jones placed 21st with her vault of 12'-3.5,” missing the cut of 13'-1.5.”
