CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - After being held scoreless for the first five innings, No. 3 Virginia scored three times in the bottom of the sixth and added five runs in the bottom of the eighth for an 8-1 win over Duke on Sunday afternoon at Davenport Field. The Blue Devils fall to 22-13 overall and 3-12 in the ACC while the Cavaliers improve to 29-7 and 10-5, respectively.
Duke took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Centerfielder Jimmy Gallagher and rightfielder Alexander Hassan led off the game with back-to-back singles. After third baseman Brett Bartles reached on an error to load the bases, Gallagher tried to score on a wild pitch but was tagged out at the plate. First baseman Nate Freiman then drew a walk on four straight pitches to load the bases before catcher Matt Williams lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Hassan.
With rightfielder Brandon Marsh on third and Virginia threatening to score in the bottom of the fourth, leftfielder Brandon Guyer sent a groundball to third but Bartles fielded it cleanly and threw out Marsh at the plate to keep the Cavaliers scoreless.
Virginia scored three times in the bottom of the sixth to take a 3-1 lead. After first baseman Greg Miclat drew a leadoff walk, Marsh dropped a bunt in front of home plate but the throw from Williams was out of the reach of second baseman Ryan McCurdy at first and went into right field. Miclat was able to score all the way from first on the play to tie the game at 1-1. Pitcher Sean Doolittle then flew out to center, moving Marsh to third. Guyer followed with an RBI-single to right to score Marsh before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by second baseman David Adams. Catcher Beau Seabury capped the frame with an RBI-single through the left side to score Guyer.
The Cavaliers added five runs in the bottom of the eighth to extend their lead to 8-1. Following a one-out single up the middle by Doolittle, Guyer sent a 2-1 offering to straightaway center for a two-run homer. Two batters later, Seabury doubled to left center before scoring on an RBI-double by third baseman Patrick Wingfield. Wingfield then scored on a Duke error and centerfielder Tim Henry added an RBI-single to right to cap the scoring.
Doolittle improved to 6-2 on the year, holding the Blue Devils to one run on four hits in six innings pitched.
Duke starter Jonathan Anderson held the Cavaliers to just three hits in five scoreless innings and left with a 1-0 lead. Freshman Michael Ness fell to 3-2 after allowing three runs on two hits in one inning of work. Only one of Ness' runs was earned.
Gallagher led the Blue Devils at the plate, going 2-for-4 on the day.
Duke will return to Jack Coombs Field on Wednesday to host Davidson at 7 p.m. The Blue Devils will then renew their rivalry with No. 2 North Carolina next weekend in Chapel Hill.
