Virginia took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. After designated hitter Greg Miclat and rightfielder Brandon Marsh led off the inning with back-to-back singles, first baseman Sean Doolittle advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Second baseman David Adams then drove in Miclat on a groundout to second for the game's first run.
The Cavaliers added a run in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead 2-0. Miclat drew a one-out walk to begin the frame before stealing second. Marsh then tripled to right center to score Miclat. With Marsh on third and the infield draw in, Doolittle sent a grounder to second but Ryan McCurdy threw out Marsh at the plate to keep the score 2-0.
Virginia scored again in the bottom of the seventh to push its lead to 3-0. Miclat sent a one-out double into the right field corner to start the inning before advancing to third on a groundout to short by Marsh. Doolittle followed with an RBI-double to left, scoring Miclat.
The Cavaliers added another run in the bottom of the eighth to take a 4-0 lead. Leftfielder Brandon Guyer lined a leadoff double down the left field line to start the frame before moving to third on a sacrifice bunt by catcher Beau Seabury. Third baseman Patrick Wingfield then laced an RBI-single to center to score Guyer.
Freshman Alexander Hassan fell to 2-2 on the season despite a great outing. Hassan held the Cavaliers to two runs on four hits in six innings of work while striking out four. Freshman Michael Ness added two innings of solid relief, limiting Virginia to two runs on four hits with a pair of strikeouts.
