DURHAM, N.C. ? Senior Tony Bajoczky tossed his second career complete game to lead Duke to an 11-1 victory over Maryland on Saturday afternoon at Jack Coombs Field. With the win, the Blue Devils improve to 24-17 overall and 5-15 in the ACC while the Terrapins fall to 23-19 and 7-13, respectively.
Bajoczky improved to 8-2 on the season, holding Maryland to eight hits in the game while striking out seven and walking just one.
Duke jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first. After centerfielder Jimmy Gallagher was hit by a pitch to start the frame, rightfielder Jonathan Anderson moved him into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Catcher Matt Williams then laced an RBI-double down the left field line to score Gallagher. First baseman Nate Freiman followed with a walk and Williams moved to third on a passed ball, giving the Blue Devils runners on the corners. Third baseman Brett Bartles then lined an RBI-single to right, scoring Williams. Leftfielder Alexander Hassan capped the inning with a two-run double to left center, scoring Freiman and Bartles.
Shortstop Gabriel Saade led off the bottom of the second with a double down the left field line. Second baseman Kyle Butler then moved Saade to third with a sacrifice bunt before Gallagher sent an RBI-single up the middle to score Saade, giving the Blue Devils a 5-0 lead.
The Blue Devils added a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to go ahead 7-0. Hassan drew a one-out walk to begin the frame. Two batters later, Saade lined an RBI-triple into the right field corner, scoring Hassan, and when the relay throw from second baseman Steve Braun got away from third baseman Mike Murphy, Saade trotted home.
Duke pushed its eighth run across in the bottom of the fifth. After Bartles and Hassan reached on consecutive infield singles, designated hitter Tim Sherlock moved both runners up a base with a groundout to first. Saade then reached on a fielder's choice but Bartles was thrown out at the plate by Murphy. After Saade stole second, Butler drew a walk to load the bases. Gallagher then reached on an RBI-single to short, driving in Hassan.
Maryland scored its lone run of the game in the top of the sixth. First baseman Gerry Spessard lined a 1-2 pitch that barely cleared the wall in right for a solo home run, making it an 8-1 ballgame.
The Blue Devils extended their lead to 9-1 in the bottom of the sixth. Freiman had a one-out single to left followed by a walk to Bartles to start the frame. Two batters later, Sherlock laced an RBI-single to left, driving in Freiman.
Saade was hit by a pitch to begin the bottom of the seventh before stealing second and advancing to third on a passed ball. Following a walk to Gallagher, Anderson sent an RBI-single down the left field line to score Saade, giving Duke a 10-1 advantage.
Freiman scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the eighth to account for the final margin.
Saade led the Blue Devils at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI-triple and three runs scored. Gallagher finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and a run scored, Hassan went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored and Bartles was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Freiman finished 1-for-3 with three runs scored, Williams was 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored and Anderson and Sherlock both went 1-for-4 with an RBI in the win.
Maryland starter Ryan Moorer fell to 3-3 on the year, allowing seven runs on six hits before being knocked out of the game after three innings.
The series finale will be tomorrow at 1 p.m. The Blue Devils will host Campbell on Tuesday at 7 p.m. before traveling to Winston-Salem to take on Wake Forest next weekend.
