COLLEGE PARK, Md. --- The Duke outdoor track and field team finished the first of three days at the ACC Championships on Thursday in College Park, Md. The women were in second place with 21 points, one behind Virginia Tech in first place. The men were in ninth place with one total point after the first day.
Women's: In the high jump, senior Debra Vento finished second and qualified for the ECAC's and the NCAA East Regional with her jump of 5'-08.75.” Vento qualified for both of those meets for the fifth straight weekend.
Senior Kelly Reynolds competed in the hammer throw on Thursday afternoon and placed ninth with a toss of 173'-11.” That qualified her for the ECAC Championships for the fourth time this season.
The javelin was good to the Duke women, with two performers scoring points and qualifying for the postseason. Junior Daina Pucurs won the event with her throw of 154'-0.” That qualified her for the ECAC's and the NCAA East Regional for the fourth time this spring. Senior Lindsey Edwards qualified for the ECAC's for the first time in 2007 after recording a throw of 135'-06.” Edwards' moved into third place on the all-time Duke javelin list and placed seventh at the ACC's.
Senior Elle Pishny finished eighth in the 10,000 meter run on Thursday night with her time of 35:01.20. That also qualified Pishny for the ECAC's in the 10,000m for the first time this year.
Men's: Junior Tyler Clarke completed the first half of the decathlon in fifth place with 2,748 points. On Friday he will compete in the 110m high hurdles, the discus, the pole vault, the javelin and the 1,500 meters to round out that competition.
