CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Duke men's and women's track and field teams were at the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill on Friday for the first of two days of competition in the UNC Invitational. Five Blue Devils qualified for postseason meets during the course of the meet. The men were in second place at the end of the day with 55 points, 25 behind leader UNC. The women also found themselves in second with a total of 61 points and are only two behind UNC in first.
Women's: Senior Kelly Reynolds competed in the hammer throw for the first time during the outdoor season and reached 169'-03.” That mark was good for first place at the UNC Invitational and qualified her for the ECAC Championships. The ECAC's will take place in Princeton, N.J., from May 11-13.
The women had two quality performances in the javelin. Junior Daina Pucurs won the event with a 166'-06” throw which also qualified her for the second week in a row for the ECAC's and the NCAA East Regional. The NCAA East Regional is May 25-26 in Gainesville, Fla. Also making her mark was senior Lindsey Edwards, who placed fourth on the all-time Duke javelin list with a 127'-03” throw.
For the second consecutive week, senior Debra Vento won the high jump and qualified for the ECAC's and NCAA East Regional. Vento's best jump for the day measured 5'-10.”
Freshman Kate Van Buskirk qualified for her first outdoor ECAC's and NCAA East Regional in the 1,500 meters on Friday evening in Chapel Hill. Her time of 4:27.15 was also the fastest time at the meet in the event.
Men's: Senior Jonathan Fay qualified for the IC4A Championships for the second time in as many tries this season with his vault of 15'-7.0.” The IC4A's will be held on the same weekend as the ECAC's, in Princeton, N.J.
Competition will resume Saturday from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., and there will be much more action for the Duke squad with 18 events still to be competed in. Additionally, three women will be competing Saturday night in Stanford, Calif.
