With their 78-43 win over Eastern Kentucky, the No. 13/10 Duke Blue Devils improve to 6-0 on the season while the Colonels fall to 2-3. Today was the first meeting between these two teams and Duke is also now 3-0 all-time against teams from the Ohio Valley Conference.
Coach Mike Krzyzewski is now 781-261 all-time and ties Arizona coach Lute Olson (who is currently on a leave of absence) for seventh place for most wins in NCAA history. They are also tied for second most among active coaches. Immediately ahead in sixth place is former Duke player Lefty Driesell with 786 victories while first place overall and among active coaches is Coach K's college coach, Bob Knight, with 893 wins.
Duke is now 6-0 for the third time in the last four years and for the 14th time in Coach K's 28 seasons.
Freshman Taylor King scored a Duke season-high 27 points, hitting 6-of-11 from behind the arc, 9-of-14 from the field overall and 3-of-4 from the free throw line. He added three steals, three rebounds and two steals.
King's 27 points set a new Duke record for most points scored by a Duke reserve in a game. The previous record of 25 was set five times ? David Henderson vs. SMU, 12/28/83; Martin Nessley at Harvard, 2/10/87; Robert Brickey vs. Harvard, 12/21/87; Jeff Capel at N.C. State, 1/21/97 and Luol Deng vs. North Carolina, 3/6/04. Duke has games started records back to the 1975-76 season.
King's 27 points ranks ninth most by a freshman in Duke history. The record is 34 set by J.J. Redick vs. Virginia on 1/15/03.
King's six three-pointers ties the Duke freshman record and sets the Duke freshman record at Cameron. Trajan Langdon hit 6-of-10 at North Carolina on 3/4/95 and Redick hit 6-of-7 at Georgia Tech on 2/26/03.
King now has two games with five or more three-pointers. Redick had six such games his freshman season and Langdon had two. The only other freshmen ever to have five or more threes in a game are Chris Duhon and Jason Williams, each doing so once.
In three games at home, King is averaging 18.0 points per game and has hit 13-of-24 (.542) of his three-pointers. He has games of 27 points today and 21 points against N.C. Central to open the season. He is also 18-of-31 (.581) from the field at home.
King's 27 points also gives Duke a 20 point scorer in each game this season. King and fellow freshman Kyle Singler each have two 20-point performances while senior DeMarcus Nelson and sophomore Jon Scheyer each have one.
Having a 20-point scorer in the first six games of the season is the fourth-longest streak to open a season under Coach K and the 11th-longest streak in school history. Duke's 2000-01 National Championship team saw a 20-point performer in each of the first 15 games while the school record was set in 1954-55 with 18 games. Under Coach K, the 1992-93 team reached 13 games and the 2001-02 team reached eight games.
Nelson scored 12 points on 5-of-9 from the field and added four rebounds and a pair of steals. Nelson has now reached double figures in five of six games this season and has 48 such games in his career.
Gerald Henderson scored 10 points on 4-of-8 from the field and added a game-high four assists and three rebounds. Henderson has also reached double figures in five of six games this season and in 12 games in his career.
Duke has won 49 straight games when holding its opponent to 50 points or less and is not 51-1 in those games under Coach K. Duke is also 106-4 since the 1948-49 season holding opponents under 50 points.
Duke forced Eastern Kentucky into 31 turnovers, the most for a Duke opponent this season and the fourth time in six games that Duke's opponent has had 20 or more turnovers. It is the first time a Duke opponent has had 30 or more turnovers and the most since Davidson committed 33 on Dec. 5, 2000.
The Blue Devils also had 20 turnovers of their own, the most since committing 20 against Holy Cross on Dec. 6, 2006.
Duke shot a season-worst 15-of-26 (.577) from the free throw line, the worst performance since hitting 8-of-15 (.533) against Wake Forest on 1/18/07.
Duke hit 11-of-26 from behind the arc as a team, the second most made this season and second time in double figures for most made. Duke season high in 2006-07 was nine, so Duke has matched or surpassed that three times in six games this season.
Duke has now sold out 261 consecutive games at Cameron Indoor Stadium dating back to Nov. 16, 1990.
With the win, Duke is...
1,824-802 all-time, including 708-202 under Coach K
102-16 all-time in November, including 88-10 under Coach K and 39-2 since 1997-98
239-46 this decade, more wins than any other team in the NCAA
393-61 vs. non-conference teams under Coach K
550-93 vs. unranked teams under Coach K including 238-23 since 1997-98 and 118-4 at home vs. unranked teams since 1997-98
886-226 as a ranked team all-time, including 28-4 all-time as the No. 13 team in the AP poll
Coach K now has 708 wins at Duke, eighth all-time for most wins at one school and third among active coaches. Don Haskins from UTEP ranks seventh with 719 wins.
