DURHAM, N.C. ? The Duke wrestling squad will send 18 of its 29 members to the East Stroudsburg Open on Saturday in East Stroudsburg, Pa. After four tournament titles and 16 top-five finishers in the first two weekends of competition, the Blue Devils will look to add to their success in preparation for the dual meet season. The East Stroudsburg tournament is the third of five weekends in a row of meets for Duke that concludes with the Davidson and Penn State Opens on Dec. 1.
Senior captain Kellan McKeon will start it off for Duke at 125 pounds. McKeon went 3-2 on Nov. 10 with one fall at the UNC Pembroke Open and holds a career record of 38-55.
At 133 pounds will be redshirt senior captain Bryan Gibson, who went 4-2 at Pembroke on his way to a fourth-place finish. His 67 victories rank 18th all-time at Duke for career wins.
Duke will wrestle two 141-pound wrestlers at East Stroudsburg. Sophomore Spencer Jasper is 6-4 in two meets this season with three falls and a second place finish at The Citadel Open on Nov. 4 in Charleston, S.C. Also at 141 will be freshman A.J. Guardado, who is 5-4 this season with one pin.
Three 149-pound wrestlers will hit the mats on Saturday, led by redshirt sophomore Michael Degli Obizzi, who was 5-0 at Pembroke on his way to winning the championship match. A pair of freshmen, Mike Bell and Colby Johnson, will also compete at 149 pounds. Bell is 5-4 and Johnson is 2-2 in 2007.
At 157 pounds, sophomores Jared Sernoffsky and Voris Tejada look to continue their strong starts after placing both placing in the top five in Duke's first two tournaments. Sernoffsky is 8-2 with a second place finish at The Citadel Open and a third place finish at the UNC Pembroke Open. Tejada is off to an 11-3 mark this year with two top five finishes. His career .732 winning percentage (30-11) currently ranks 11th all-time at Duke. Sophomore Danny Torres will also compete in his third meet of the year.
Junior captain Addison Nuding and freshman Willy Mello will take on the competition at 165 pounds. Nuding was 5-1 at Pembroke on his way to a second place showing. Mello captured The Citadel Open at 165 pounds and is 5-2 this year with one fall.
Redshirt sophomore Ben Wales and redshirt junior Turner Rooney will stand in for Duke at 174-pounds. Wales won The Citadel Open in his debut at 174 and now holds a 6-3 record there this season. Rooney placed second at the The Citadel, losing only to Wales at the meet.
One of Duke's strongest wrestlers is 184-pound redshirt sophomore John Barone, who swept through the opposition in Pembroke on his way to the title and a 5-0 record. Barone is 40-16 as a Blue Devil, which is good for 16th place on Duke's all-time winning percentage list with a .714 clip.
At 197 pounds, a pair of Duke wrestlers should make a significant impact on their division. Redshirt junior Dan Fox is 4-3 in the early going this season with one pin. Redshirt freshman Robert Holbrook is 5-3 and earned a third-place finish at The Citadel Open.
Last but definitely not least at the heavyweight division will be redshirt sophomore Wade “Tickles” Van Sickle, who took second place at The Citadel and third place at UNC Pembroke for an 8-2 mark with one fall this season. Van Sickle is now 30-26 overall as a Blue Devil.
Next up for the Blue Devils is the all day six-team Indiana Hoosier Duals in Bloomington, Ind., on Saturday, Nov. 24. Duke will wrestle Oregon, Ohio, Indiana, Cumberland and Liberty from 10:00 a.m. through 8:00 p.m.
