DURHAM, N.C. - The No. 20 Duke Blue Devils will head to Cary on Wednesday for an ACC Tournament quarterfinal showdown at 5:30 p.m. with the North Carolina Tar Heels. The match, which is the second this season between the two archrivals, will be played at SAS Soccer Park. North Carolina won the regular season bout, 1-0 in double-overtime in Chapel Hill.
The Blue Devils: Duke is 11-6-1 in 2007 and 4-3-1 in ACC play, which put them in a tie for third place in the conference with Maryland and Virginia Tech. The Blue Devils earned the No. 3 seed in the tournament due to their 1-0-1 head-to-head record against their co-third place finishers. Duke has yet to play a neutral site game this season.
The Opponent: The Tar Heels have posted a 6-7-5 record this season and a 3-5-0 mark in the ACC, good for sixth place in the regular season. North Carolina is 1-0-1 at neutral sites and 2-5-1 against ranked foes.
Series History: Duke leads the all-time series with North Carolina, 40-36-9. In their last meeting, the Blue Devils lost a 1-0 double-overtime game to the Tar Heels on Oct. 11 in Chapel Hill. The goal ended a 423:49 offensive goal drought between the two squads over their last four-plus matches. The Blue Devils have played the Tar Heels more than any other opponent in the program's history, with 85 meetings.
Carlyle Cup: The Blue Devils will have a chance to win back one-half of the point in Carlyle Cup competition that they lost on Oct. 11 in the regular season meeting with the Heels. North Carolina leads 6.0-1.5 over Duke in this year's Carlyle Cup, which is a year-long all-sports competition between the Blue Devils and the Tar Heels, sponsored by Carlyle & Co. of Greensboro, N.C. In seven seasons, the Blue Devils and the Tar Heels have won three Carlyle Cups apiece and tied once, in 2006-07.
Duke in the ACC Tournament: Duke is 18-15-3 all-time in the ACC Tournament, which began in 1987. The Blue Devils captured ACC Tournament Championships in 1999, 2005 and 2006. Their back-to-back titles the last two seasons marks only the second time in the tournament's history that a program has repeated as champions. Prior to 1987, the Blue Devils won two ACC Championships, in 1980 and 1982, by finishing first in regular season conference play.
The ACC Tournament will run through Nov. 18 in Cary. If Duke should win on Wednesday, they would play the winner of the No. 2 Wake Forest- No. 7 Clemson match at 8 p.m. on Friday night. The ACC Tournament Championship game is Sunday at 3:30 p.m., and will be nationally televised on Fox Sports Net. All matches will be available online via webcast at ACCSelect.com.
