CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ? The Duke volleyball team travelled to Chapel Hill and swept North Carolina, 3-0 (30-21, 30-16, 30-21), on Saturday night at Carmichael Auditorium. The Blue Devils improve to 11-2 overall and 4-0 in the ACC while the Tar Heels fall to 3-11 overall and 1-4 in league play.
The Blue Devils never trailed in the match and the Tar Heels only tied the score once. The win for Duke marked the first time the Blue Devils have won at Carolina since 1997.
Duke opened game one with an 8-4 lead, and after North Carolina cut it to two points at 10-8, the Blue Devils went on a 5-1 run to force a Tar Heel timeout. Duke then scored four straight points to make it a 10-point game at 19-9, forcing North Carolina to take their second timeout of the game. Duke's 10-1 run in the middle of the game opened up a 20-9 lead for the Blue Devils. The Tar Heels managed to cut the lead to eight points at 25-17 before Duke scored five of the next nine points to close out game one, 30-21.
After starting game two with a 12-9 advantage, the Blue Devils used an 8-4 run to force North Carolina to call their second timeout of the game at 20-13. Duke then scored 10 of the next 13 points to cap an 18-7 run and claim a 30-16 game two victory. The Blue Devils hit .333 in the second game and held the Tar Heels to a -.021 hitting percentage.
In game three, Duke used a 9-2 start to take an early seven-point lead. The Blue Devils would then build a 17-9 lead to force a Carolina timeout. Duke extended its lead to 10 points at 20-10 before closing out the match with a 30-21 game three win.
Freshman Rachael Moss recorded her sixth double-double of the season, matching her career high of 15 kills to go along with 16 digs. Junior Carrie DeMange had her eighth double-double of the year, posting 14 kills and 13 digs to go along with seven blocks. Sophomore Sue Carls recorded 12 kills and senior Tealle Hunkus added seven kills. Junior Ali Hausfeld paced the Duke attack with a match-high 43 assists and fell two digs short of a double-double.
Junior Jenny Shull anchored the Duke defense with 11 digs while Hunkus added seven digs. Carls added four blocks and Hausfeld had three blocks defensively for the Blue Devils.
With the win, Duke takes a 1.5-0 lead over North Carolina in this year's Carlyle Cup, an-all sports competition between the Blue Devils and the Tar Heels sponsored by Carlyle & Co. of Greensboro, N.C.
The Blue Devils will return to Cameron Indoor Stadium next weekend to host Virginia (11-3, 4-1 ACC) on Friday before taking on Virginia Tech (10-4, 4-1 ACC) on Saturday. Both matches are scheduled for a 7 p.m. start. Duke split the season series with both schools in 2005 with each team picking up home victories.
