COLLEGE PARK, Md. ? Junior midfielder Maurice Edu scored the game's only goal in the 14th minute to lift No. 3 Maryland to a 1-0 win over No. 7 Duke on Friday night in front of a record crowd at Ludwig Field. The Blue Devils fall to 7-2-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the ACC while the Terrapins improve to 10-1-0 overall and 3-1-0 in league play.
The 6,489 fans in attendance set the record for the largest crowd at Maryland's home stadium.
Edu's game-winning goal came off a corner kick. Sophomore forward Graham Zusi sent a corner into the box where Edu headed the ball into the back of the net.
Despite being outshot 8-6 in the second half, Maryland held a 12-11 lead in shots in the game. The Terrapins put five shots on goal compared to the Blue Devils' three shots on goal. Maryland also held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Junior keeper Justin Papadakis recorded four saves in the game for the Blue Devils while sophomore keeper Chris Seitz had three saves for the Terrapins.
Duke will return to the field on Friday, Oct. 6, when the Blue Devils host No. 5 Virginia (9-1-0, 2-1-0 ACC) at 7 p.m. at Koskinen Stadium.
