DURHAM, N.C. - Junior midfielder Joe Germanese blasted a shot past Cavaliers' goalkeeper Ryan Burke in the 57th minute and the Blue Devils held on for a 2-1 upset victory in front of 923 on a cold and windy night at Koskinen Stadium. Duke improved to 8-2-1 on the season and 3-1-1 in the ACC, while Virginia fell to 11-2 and 3-2.
With the game knotted 1-1, junior midfielder Michael Videira took a pass from senior forward Chris Loftus. Videira tapped the ball over to Germanese, who hit a left-footed line drive from about twenty yards out in the back right corner of the net.
Playing into a strong wind and being outshot by Virginia 7-3 in the first half, the Blue Devils scored first and went into halftime even with the Cavaliers. Junior goalkeeper Justin Papadakis led the defensive effort with four saves, giving up the Cavaliers only goal on a penalty kick.
In the 14th minute, junior defender Tim Jepson scored his first goal of the season on a miscommunication by the Virginia defense. With a restart from thirty-five yards out, senior defender Kyle Helton passed the ball over to Jepson, who struck what appeared to be a pass to Loftus. Goalkeeper Ryan Burke was following Loftus across the net, and thinking Loftus had beaten him to the ball, let it bounce past both players and into the goal.
Nine minutes later, it was Virginia's turn, when Cavaliers' forward Adam Cristman was taken down inside the box and the Cavaliers were awarded a penalty kick. Forward Yannick Reyering, who scored the only goal in last year's 1-0 Virginia victory over Duke, netted the penalty kick into the lower left corner of the net.
The win for the Blue Devils also marked career win number 389 for Coach John Rennie, making him the all-time wins leader for an ACC coach. He is now one behind Clemson's I.M. Ibrahim with 89 victories in ACC play.
Duke was able to rebound after a tough loss to Maryland last week on the road. The Blue Devils improved to 6-1-1 when playing at Koskinen Stadium. While not an extremely large crowd, the Blue Devil fans were very vocal in their team's victory.
Next up for the Blue Devils is a match against Davidson on Wednesday, October 11. The game is set to be played at 7 p.m. at Koskinen Stadium. The Blue Devils will return to ACC play on October 15 at North Carolina State.
