
Blue Devils Set To Take On Tar Heels On Saturday

DURHAM, N.C. ? The Duke volleyball team will make the eight mile trip to Chapel Hill to take on Tobacco Road rival North Carolina at 6 p.m. on Saturday night at Carmichael Auditorium. The Blue Devils enter the match with a 10-2 overall record and a 3-0 mark in the ACC.
Duke opened the ACC regular season schedule last weekend by posting wins over Clemson and Georgia Tech at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils swept Clemson, 3-0 (30-21, 30-22, 30-25), on Friday night before defeating Georgia Tech, 3-1 (30-21, 29-31, 30-18, 30-18), on Saturday. Duke then improved to 3-0 in the ACC with a 3-0 (30-13, 30-19, 30-20) sweep of N.C. State on Wednesday night in Raleigh.
The Blue Devils are one of two ACC teams undefeated in league play, joining Florida State, who is also 3-0 in conference action.
Scouting North Carolina
North Carolina enters Saturday's tilt 3-10 overall and 1-3 in ACC play. After winning their opening match of the season against Idaho, the Tar Heels suffered seven straight losses, falling to Arkansas, Oklahoma, Utah, Tennessee, Loyola Marymount, Illinois and College of Charleston before defeating Wichita State on Sept. 9. North Carolina opened ACC play with a win over N.C. State on Sept. 15 but has since dropped three straight conference matches, falling to Virginia Tech and Virginia last weekend and to Wake Forest on Wednesday. In 2005, the Tar Heels went 23-10 overall and 18-4 in league play to finish tied for first atop the ACC standings with Maryland.
Duke-North Carolina Series History
North Carolina holds a 49-40 lead over Duke in series history. The Blue Devils had early success against the Tar Heels, winning 16 of the first 20 matches played in series history. In 2005, Duke and North Carolina split the season series with both teams claiming 3-2 wins on their home courts.
Carlyle Cup
Duke holds a 1-0 lead over North Carolina in this year's Carlyle Cup, which is a yearlong all-sports competition between the Blue Devils and the Tar Heels sponsored by Carlyle & Co. of Greensboro, N.C. The Duke field hockey team earned the first point of the year with a 2-1 overtime victory over North Carolina last Saturday. Saturday's volleyball match is worth 0.5 points in the Carlyle Cup standings. Duke captured the inaugural Carlyle Cup following the 2000-01 year. In six seasons, the Blue Devils and the Tar Heels have won three Carlyle Cups apiece.
A Look Ahead
The Blue Devils will return to Cameron Indoor Stadium next weekend to host Virginia (11-3, 4-1 ACC) on Friday before taking on Virginia Tech (9-4, 3-1 ACC) on Saturday. Both matches are scheduled for a 7 p.m. start. Duke split the season series with both schools in 2005 with each team picking up home victories.
