DURHAM, N.C. ? Junior midfielder Michael Videira put an end to the Blue Devils' scoreless streak and put Duke (7-1-1, 2-0-1) back in the wins column as he scored his fifth goal of the season in a 1-0 victory over Boston College (4-4-0, 1-2-0).
In the 77th minute, junior Zach Pope fired a corner kick into the box which ricocheted off Boston College's goalkeeper, Issey Maholo. Videira fired the ball back into the net from point blank range and Maholo was unable to save the ball before it crossed the goal line.
Boston College outshot Duke for the game, 13-12, though the Blue Devils held a 10-9 margin on shots in the second half. Both teams placed six shots on goals, and Duke held a 5-3 edge on corner kicks for the game.
While the Blue Devil offense refound its scoring touch, Duke's defense claimed its third shutout of the season, all of which have come with junior Justin Papadakis in goal. Duke has surrendered just two goals in its last four games, holding opponents to a 0.50 goals per game average in that stretch.
Boston College's Charlie Davies, who led the ACC in shots prior to Saturday's game (41) and ranked fourth in the conference with six goals, was held to a single shot by the Blue Devil defense. Papadakis made six saves, bringing his save percentage to .767 on the season.
“It was an even game,” head coach John Rennie said after the game. “We wanted to win; they wanted to win. It was a character kind of win, 1-0, getting a shutout against a good team and against a great player.”
The win was Rennie's 388th at Duke, placing him in a tie with Clemson's I.M. Ibrahim for the most wins at an ACC school. Rennie now has 88 wins against conference foes, two behind Ibrahim's record 90 wins in ACC play.
Prior to Videira's goal, the Blue Devils had not scored since the 53rd minute of their 2-1 win over Harvard, a streak spanning over 203 minutes. The goal was also Duke's first at home since a 1-0 victory against South Florida in the Duke/adidas Classic on Sept. 3. Duke registered over 340 consecutive minutes without a goal in Koskinen Stadium during that period.
With the win, the Blue Devils surpassed Virginia for sole possession of second place in the ACC standings. Duke holds a one point margin over Virginia and Maryland, with both teams sitting at 2-1-1.
Duke's next game is Friday, Sept. 29, as they travel to College Park, Md., to play No. 5 Maryland. Game time is set for 8 p.m. at Ludwig Field.
