DURHAM, N.C. ? Sophomore Will Friesinger scored the game-winning goal in the 60th minute to lift UNC Wilmington to a 1-0 victory over No. 4 Duke on Tuesday night at Koskinen Stadium. The Blue Devils fall to 6-1-1 on the season while the Seahawks improve to 5-1-1.
After a scoreless first half, UNC Wilmington got on the board when Friesinger received a cross from freshman Cameron Turney and fired a shot that bounced off the top of the crossbar and into the back of the net. Turney's cross from the right corner slipped past a diving Justin Papadakis, leaving Friesinger wide open for an uncontested shot.
Duke had a great scoring opportunity in the 58th minute when junior Joe Germanese dribbled around a defender at the top of the box and played the ball to sophomore Mike Grella's feet. Grella turned and blasted a shot but the kick sailed over the top of the goal.
The Blue Devils had another scoring chance at the end of the game. With three seconds left on the clock, senior Chris Loftus sent a corner kick into the box and junior Tim Jepson fired a shot that was blocked by a Seahawk defender as time ran out.
“You can't win if you don't score goals,” stated Duke head coach John Rennie. “It's as simple as that. We had our chances. We had a great chance just before they scored. Mike Grella had a great chance right in front of goal and hit it over. They then came down, we made a mistake on that play and they punished us and got a goal.”
The Seahawks' 1-0 win came despite being outshot, 22-10, in the game. In the opening half, the Blue Devils outshot the Seahawks, 7-5, with each team recording two shots on goal. Duke then took 15 shots in the second half but only managed to put three on goal.
Papadakis and Seahawks' keeper Brad Knighton posted five saves apiece in the game.
The Blue Devils will return to action on Saturday with a 7 p.m. game against Boston College at 7 p.m. at Koskinen Stadium.
