DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke men's and women's cross country teams each took first place at Saturday's James Madison Invitational, as the women's team took first all alone and the men's team tied 14th-ranked Georgetown for first place. Nine Blue Devil runners came in with top-10 finishes at New Market Battlefield in New Market, Va.
The men's team tied Georgetown and defeated James Madison and Longwood, finishing with a total time of 2:07:44.30, averaging 25:32.86 per five-mile. Duke and Georgetown each tallied 33 points.
Junior captain Chris Spooner finished third among all participants with a time of 25:13.90 recording the Blue Devil men's team's top finish of the day. Duke took places six through 10, as the next-highest Duke finisher was freshman Tradelle Ward who came in sixth.
James Madison finished third and Longwood, fourth as Duke head coach Norm Ogilvie's season record vs. Division I opponents now stands at 2-0-1.
The seventh-ranked Duke women's team competed against Georgetown, James Madison, George Mason and Longwood, also coming in first, with a total time of 1:37:39.00, averaging 19:31.80. The team totaled 32 points for the victory.
Senior Emily McCabe took first place overall in the meet with a time of 18:20.00, while Maddie McKeever took second place with a time of 18:57.00. Also placing in the top-10 for the Duke women were senior Natasha Roetter (eighth) and freshman Emily Sherrard (10th).
Georgetown came in second in the women's race with a team time of 1:40:14.00, while James Madison, George Mason and Longwood finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively. Duke head coach Kevin Jermyn's season record vs. Division I opponents now stands at 4-0.

Next up for the Duke cross country teams is the Oregon Invitational, which will be held in Eugene, Ore. on Sept. 29.
