The Blue Devils trailed only once during the match on their way to a 30-19, 30-17, 30-17 victory.
"I thought it was a great team effort tonight," stated Duke head coach Jolene Nagel. "We had a lot of people who got the opportunity to play and they made the most of it. It really allowed us a chance to develop and gain confidence as a team."
In the opening game, Duke jumped out to a 3-0 lead on kills by sophomores Sue Carls and Aana Wherry and junior Carrie DeMange. Later in the match with the Blue Devils leading 8-6, Duke went on an 11-4 run to take a 19-10 lead. Duke would then score 11 of the next 20 points to win game one, 30-19.
In game two, the Blue Devils used an 8-0 start to take control of the match. West Virginia would cut the lead to 11-4 before Duke scored four straight points to take a 15-4 lead. The Blue Devils then scored seven of the next 12 points to go ahead 22-9 on their way to a 30-17 game two victory.
West Virginia scored the first point of the third game to take their first and only lead of the night. Duke answered with six straight points to take a 6-1 lead. The Blue Devils would then score seven of the next 12 points to take a 13-6 lead. After the Mountaineers cut the score to 13-10, Duke used an 11-4 run to go ahead 24-14 on their way to a 30-17 win.
DeMange posted her second double-double of the season with a match-high 17 kills and 11 digs, while Wherry recorded her first career double-double, registering a career-high 10 kills to go along with a career-high 14 digs. DeMange and Wherry also added four blocks apiece.
Junior Ali Hausfeld paced the Duke attack with a match-high 37 assists and junior Daina Pucurs added a career-high tying 10 assists for the Blue Devils.
Carls posted a career-high 10 kills and senior Pixie Levanas and sophomore Jourdan Norman added eight kills apiece. Freshman Brittany Staffeil contributed four kills in the win and junior Jenny Shull anchored the Duke defense with 13 digs.
"We served well and that allowed us to go on some runs," Nagel added. "I was very pleased with our energy and communication tonight."
Duke will return to the court for two matches on Saturday beginning with a 1 p.m. match against Eastern Kentucky. The Blue Devils will then face No. 2 Penn State at 8 p.m. to close out the 2006 Penn State Classic.
