DURHAM, N.C. ? UNC Asheville starter Tim Johnson scattered seven hits over eight innings and held Duke to two runs in the Bulldogs' 14-2 win over the Blue Devils on Tuesday night at Jack Coombs Field. Duke falls to 14-40 on the season while UNCA improves to 24-28.
Johnson (2-7) allowed a run in the first inning but then held the Blue Devils scoreless for the next six frames to pick up his second victory of the year.
The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the opening frame on a solo homer by left fielder Rob Vernon.
Duke would tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first. After shortstop Brett Bartles lined a two-out triple off the base of the wall in center field, first baseman Nate Freiman laced an RBI-single through the left side to even the score.
UNCA posted four runs in the top of the third to take a 5-1 lead. Vernon drew a leadoff walk before advancing to third on a single up the middle by right fielder Elliott Arrington. Designated hitter Brett Robinson then singled through the right side to score Vernon. First baseman Johnny Martinez followed with a two-run double off the top of the right field wall, scoring Arrington and Robinson. Two batters later, catcher Edmund Locklear lined an RBI-single down the right field line to cap the inning.
In the top of the sixth, Robinson's line drive back to the mound bounced off pitcher Ryan Perry's glove and into left field, scoring Vernon and Arrington to give the Bulldogs a 7-1 advantage.
With one on and two out in the top of the eighth, Robinson laced an RBI-double into the right center field gap to score Vernon. Martinez then turned on a 1-0 offering and launched a two-run shot to right to give UNCA a 10-1 lead.
Second baseman Javier Socorro roped an RBI-single to center field in the bottom of the eighth to make it a 10-2 ballgame.
The Bulldogs then added four runs in the top of the ninth to cap the scoring at 14-2.
Duke starter Jim Perry fell to 0-7 on the season after allowing five runs on seven hits in 2.0 innings.
Bartles, Socorro and left fielder Daniel Palmer collected two hits apiece to lead the Blue Devils at the plate.
Robinson went 4-for-5 with five RBI to lead the Bulldogs on the night. Vernon and Martinez both had three hits while Locklear and center fielder Kevin Mattison added a pair of hits each.
Duke will wrap up the 2006 season with tomorrow afternoon's 3 p.m. game against UNC Asheville.
