DURHAM, N.C. ? First baseman Chad Flack hit a pair of home runs and starter Robert Woodard allowed two runs over eight innings to lead No. 1 North Carolina to an 8-2 win over Duke on Saturday afternoon at Jack Coombs Field. The Blue Devils fall to 14-32 overall and 6-17 in the ACC while the Tar Heels improve to 38-8 overall and 17-6 in league play.
North Carolina jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening frame. After left fielder Kyle Shelton reached on an error to start the game, Flack singled through the right side to give the Tar Heels a runner in scoring position. Shortstop Josh Horton then moved both runners up a base with a sacrifice bunt. Catcher Tim Federowicz followed with an RBI-single to center, scoring Shelton and moving Flack to third. Right fielder Jay Cox then laced an RBI-single to right to score Flack. Designated hitter Benji Johnson would then cap the inning with an RBI-single to left.
The Tar Heels added a pair of runs in the top of the second to take a 5-0 lead. Shelton lined a two-out single to left before Flack drove the first pitch he saw over the left field wall for a two-run homer.
Flack would hit his second home run of the game in the top of the fifth, sending a 1-0 offering to left to give North Carolina a six-run advantage.
Duke scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the sixth. After center fielder Jimmy Gallagher drew a walk to begin the inning, shortstop Brett Bartles lined an RBI-double off the base of the wall in left center to score Gallagher from first.
The Blue Devils added another run in the bottom of the seventh to cut the deficit to 6-2. With one on and two out, pinch hitter Tim Sherlock lined an RBI-double over Shelton's head in left, scoring left fielder Daniel Palmer from first.
Flack laced an RBI-double to left and right fielder Matt Spencer added a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to left in the top of the ninth to cap the scoring at 8-2.
Woodard improved to 5-1 on the season, holding the Blue Devils to two runs on eight hits in 8.0 innings.
Duke starter Jonathan Anderson fell to 3-6 on the year after allowing six runs on 10 hits in 4.2 innings.
Bartles led the Blue Devils at the plate, going 2-for-4 with an RBI-double.
Flack went 4-for-5 with four RBI and three runs scored to lead the Tar Heels at the plate while Federowicz collected three hits and Johnson added a pair of hits in the win.
Duke and North Carolina will wrap up their three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
