BROCKTON, Mass. ? Designated hitter Nate Freiman hit a pair of home runs to lead the Duke Blue Devils to a 14-7 win over Boston College on Sunday afternoon at Campanelli Stadium. The Blue Devils improve to 10-23 overall and 3-9 in the ACC while the Eagles fall to 15-12-1 overall and 4-8 in league play.
Freiman, a native of nearby Wellesley, Mass., returned to the Duke lineup on Friday after missing 27 consecutive games due to injury. The 6-7 freshman hit three homers in the series to lead the Blue Devils to their first ACC series win of the season.
Duke grabbed a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first. After Freiman lined a two-out single to left, second baseman Javier Socorro singled to right center to give the Blue Devils runners on the corners. Catcher Matt Williams then laced an RBI-double to the gap in right center to score Freiman.
The Blue Devils would score four runs in the top of the second to take a 5-0 lead. First baseman Jonathan Nicolla led off the inning by blasting a 0-1 pitch to straightaway center for his third home run of the season. After right fielder Adam Murray singled through the right side and stole second, left fielder Daniel Palmer moved Murray to third with a sacrifice bunt. Center fielder Jimmy Gallagher then drew a walk to give Duke runners on the corners. Shortstop Brett Bartles followed with a sacrifice fly to right to score Murray. Freiman then capped the inning with a two-run homer, crushing a 1-1 offering over the wall in right center.
Boston College scored a run in the bottom of the second to make it a 5-1 ballgame. After designated hitter Jett Ruiz hit a two-out single to right center, right fielder Brandon Ziemann roped an RBI-double to right center to score Ruiz.
In the top of the fourth, Duke would score on an RBI-single by Bartles to take a 6-1 lead. Palmer hit a one-out single to right center before advancing to second on a single by Gallagher. Bartles then lined an RBI-single through the left side to score Palmer.
Catcher Shawn McGill scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the fourth to cut the deficit to 6-2.
Center fielder Pete Frates lined a solo shot to right on a 1-2 pitch in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 6-3 ballgame.
Duke would answer with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to take an 8-3 lead. After Palmer hit a two-out single to center, Gallagher lined an RBI-double to right center. Bartles followed with an RBI-single to right center to score Gallagher.
Murray extended Duke's lead to 9-3 with an RBI-single in the seventh.
The Eagles would score three times in the bottom of the seventh to make it a three-run ballgame. Second baseman Johnny Ayers had a sacrifice fly to center, Frates lined an RBI-single to center and left fielder Jared McGuire added an RBI-groundout for Boston College.
The Blue Devils added a pair of runs in the eighth to take an 11-6 lead. Bartles scored on a Boston College error and third baseman Kyle Kreick hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Freiman.
Ziemann lined an RBI-single to center in the bottom of the eighth to cut Duke's lead to 11-7.
Bartles and Freiman hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the ninth to give the Blue Devils a 14-7 lead.
Duke starter Jonathan Anderson improved to 2-3 on the season, holding the Eagles to six runs on 10 hits in 7.0 innings of work.
Boston College starter Nate Jeans fell to 1-2 on the year after allowing six runs on nine hits in 4.0 innings pitched.
The Blue Devils will return to the diamond on Wednesday at High Point before hosting Virginia for a three-game series Friday through Sunday at Jack Coombs Field.
