DURHAM, N.C. ? Junior Tony Bajoczky tossed a complete game five-hitter to lead the Duke Blue Devils to a 4-1 win over the La Salle Explorers on Tuesday afternoon at Jack Coombs Field. The Blue Devils improve to 6-10 on the season while the Explorers fall to 1-8.
Bajoczky (1-4) recorded a career-high nine strikeouts to pick up his first victory of the season. It was the second complete game by the Duke pitching staff in the last four outings. Junior Danny Otero, who is slated to take the mound tomorrow, pitched a complete game in last Friday's 4-2 win over Maryland.
Duke took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Catcher Matt Williams singled to right to start the inning before advancing to second on a one-out single by right fielder Jimmy Gallagher. Third baseman Adam Murray then singled through the right side, scoring Williams from second.
La Salle answered in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 1-1. First baseman John Reifsnyder singled through the left side and then advanced to second on a single by second baseman Mike Essery. After designated hitter Billy Kern was hit by a pitch to load the bases, shortstop Justin Handler laced an RBI-single through the left side, scoring Reifsnyder to tie the game.
The Blue Devils scored three runs in the seventh to take a 4-1 lead. After designated hitter Tim Sherlock was hit by a pitch, left fielder Daniel Palmer reached on a bunt single. Center fielder Jonathan Anderson was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Second baseman Javier Socorro followed with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Sherlock and advancing Palmer and Anderson. Williams capped the inning with a two-run single through the left side to give Duke a three-run lead.
That was all the run support Bajoczky would need as the right-hander held the Explorers to one hit in the final 4.0 scoreless innings.
La Salle starter Dan Waters (0-2) suffered his second loss of the season, allowing four runs on six hits in 6.1 innings of work.
Williams led Duke at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Gallagher was 2-for-4 while Murray went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Sherlock, Palmer and Anderson all added a hit and a run scored in the Blue Devil win.
Handler paced La Salle on the afternoon, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
The Blue Devils and the Explorers will complete their two-game series tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. at Jack Coombs Field.
