DURHAM, N.C. - While J.J. Redick's various record-chases have made headlines all year, fellow senior Shelden Williams has grabbed two impressive career marks this season. Back in January against N.C. State, he became the school's all-time leader in blocked shots. Last weekend in Greensboro, his 32 rebounds in two NCAA tourney games took him to the top of the all-time Duke rebounding ladder.
Both records previously were held by three-time All-America Mike Gminski, who graduated in 1980. Gminski had 345 blocks in his 122 games. Entering the Sweet 16, Williams has 418 in his 138 games.
G-Man had 1,242 career rebounds. Williams now has 1,249 with at least one game left to play. His 46 points in the two Greensboro games sent him over the 1,900 mark for his career, to 1,905 which ranks 14the on the school's all-time list. He passed Dick Groat and Jeff Mullins last weekend and is now just 19 points behind Grant Hill ? three players whose jerseys are retired.
“He's great, in every sense of the word,” coach Mike Krzyzewski said. “We're so lucky to have him. He's going to go down as one of the great players in this conference, and at Duke. He's broken all of these records, and I think he's scored over 1,900 points too. He's such a team guy. Someone at the next level's going to be really lucky, because he'll play for 12 years, be a starter, and bring his lunch pail every time, and be a double-double guy.”
Williams passed Gminski in rebounding with an offensive board about six minutes into the second half of the George Washington game. He finished with 14 boards in that game, after getting 18 against Southern. His career best remains his 19-rebound effort in this year's ACC opener against Virginia Tech.
“He's a very talented big man,” said his GW counterpart on Saturday, Pops Mensah-Bonsu. “He can take over a game on both ends of the floor as you saw today. He can affect the game on the defensive end and have an impact on the offensive end. He's a great rebounder and a strong player. I think people do tend to forget about him sometimes, but he is an All-American.”
Williams is one of just six players in Duke history with over 1,000 career rebounds, and just the third to play under Krzyzewski. The others, besides Gminski, include Christian Laettner (1,149), Randy Denton (1,067), Mike Lewis (1,051) and Danny Ferry (1,003). Denton and Lewis have the best career averages at 12.7 and 12.5 boards per game, respectively.
Williams improved his career total of double-doubles to 58, tying Denton on the all-time Duke list. He does not have enough possible games remaining to reach Gminski's record of 63.
Redick, meanwhile, reached a few more milestones in Greensboro. He increased his total of three-point shots made this year to 136, breaking Jason Williams' old single-season mark of 132. He is now just one off of former Georgia Tech star Dennis Scott's ACC mark of 137. Redick improved his scoring total for this season to 949 points, the second highest in ACC history. Scott also holds that high-water mark with 970 points in 1990.
