FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. ? Four Duke runners combined to down a nine-year-old school record at the Tyson Invitational Saturday, throwing away Duke's best 4x400m relay time of 3:17.51 by running a 3:16.17. Freshman Nick Trombold ran a 48.9 100m first leg, followed by junior Matt Danforth in 49.7 and sophomore Brett Morrell in 49.8 with junior Daniel King bringing up the year in 47.7.

The relay record was the third Duke record to fall in the young 2006 season, as senior Clara Horowitz downed the women's 3,000 and 5,000m records in successive weeks on Jan. 28 and Feb. 4. Trombold, Danforth, Morrell and King qualified for the IC4A Championships in Boston with their performance Saturday. Duke's record came one event after the USA 4x400 relay team recorded a world record of 3:01.96 on the same track.

Junior Debra Vento posted the 10th-best high jump in the nation at the Tyson Invitational, clearing 5-10.75 for fifth place. Vento reached a height good enough for NCAA provisional standards for the third time this season after notching 5-10 in two earlier meets.

In the women's 800m, two Blue Devils earned ECAC qualifying marks for the second time this season with junior Lindsay Owen lowering her best time of the season with a 14th-place 2:13.52. Freshman Molly Lehman led the Blue Devils in the event in 11th place with a time of 2:13.12.

Saturday's performances came a day after sophomore Chris Spooner ran a career-best 4:08.69 mile to place seventh with Duke's best and the Atlantic Coast Conference's second best mile performance this season.

The Blue Devils return to action next weekend, when they head to the Virginia Tech Invitational, Feb. 17-18.
