DURHAM, N.C. - Sophomore forward Jamal Boykin has decided to leave Duke University, school officials announced Friday. Boykin saw action in the first three games this season, averaging 1.3 points and 4.0 rebounds.
The Los Angeles, Calif., native came down with mononucleosis in late November and has missed Duke's last six contests. He returned to his California home last week and informed Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski of his decision to depart the school on Thursday night.
“Jamal is a great young man and we wish him the best in his future,” said Krzyzewski. “We're friends and we totally support him through his illness, his impending transfer and whatever family concerns he has.”
A 6-7, 230-pounder, Boykin saw action in 26 games at Duke as a freshman in 2005-06.
