KNOXVILLE, Tenn. ? No. 25 Duke went in to the Stokely Athletic Center here on Friday night and defeated host Tennessee in the opening round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament with a 3-1 (30-22, 26-30, 30-25, 30-27) win to advance to the second round for the second straight season. With the win, the Blue Devils improve to 29-3 while the Vols finish their season at 19-11 after advancing to the Final Four a year ago. Additionally, the Blue Devils handed the Lady Vols their first NCAA Tournament loss at home.
Duke advances to the second round Saturday at 5 p.m. here as they will face No. 17 San Diego, who was a 3-0 winner over Jacksonville State in the night's first match. Duke extended its current win streak to 11 matches and the 29 wins is the fourth highest total in school history.
Juniors Ali Hausfeld and Carrie DeMange showed why they were first team All-ACC selections as Hausfeld finished with 56 assists, tied her career high with 12 kills while hitting .579 and added six digs and six blocks. DeMange had a match-high 21 kills while hitting .405 and added to her performance with team highs of 16 digs and seven blocks.
Sophomore Sue Carls had 13 kills while hitting .407 and added four blocks while freshman Rachael Moss had 15 kills and 15 digs. Sophomore Jourdan Norman had seven blocks and six digs while senior Tealle Hunkus had eight kills and eight digs. Junior Jenny Shull matched DeMange's dig total with 16 of her own.
The two teams traded the first 14 points of the opening game before Duke used a 4-0 run to take an 11-7 lead. Tennessee would close the score to one point at 12-11 before a 3-0 Blue Devil run gave Duke a 15-11 advantage. The Blue Devils then used a 5-3 run to go ahead 20-14, forcing a Tennessee timeout. The Vols were forced to use their second timeout of the game after another 5-3 Duke run gave the Blue Devils an eight-point advantage at 25-17. Duke would then score five of the game's final 10 points to take game one, 30-22.
DeMange led Duke with five kills in the opening game to go along with a .556 hitting percentage. Moss added four kills while Hausfeld and Norman had three kills apiece. Hausfeld paced the offense with 13 assists in game one while adding a pair of blocks, Shull had five digs and Moss and Hunkus had four digs each. The Blue Devils hit .350 in the opening game while holding the Vols to a .093 hitting percentage.
Tennessee opened game two with a 6-2 advantage before a 7-3 Duke run tied the score at nine all. The Blue Devils would take a 15-13 lead midway through the game before the Vols tied it at 15 all. Tennessee regained the lead at 17-16 and then used a 7-4 run to push its lead to 24-20. Duke then closed the score to two points at 26-24 with a 4-2 run to force a Tennessee timeout. Despite Duke's late run, the Vols held on for a 30-26 game two victory, tying the match at one game apiece. Carls had six kills on eight swings for a .625 hitting percentage in the second game while Hausfeld and DeMange added three kills apiece. Hausfeld had 11 more assists and two more blocks in game two and DeMange added four blocks for the Blue Devils.
Game three was tight throughout as the Blue Devils and the Vols traded the first 38 points of the game with Duke holding the largest lead at three points. After Tennessee took a 21-19 lead, the Blue Devils went on a 3-0 run to go ahead 22-21, forcing a Vols timeout. A 5-3 Duke run forced Tennessee to use their second timeout of the game at 27-24. The Blue Devils then finished off game three by scoring three of the next four points for a 30-25 victory.
DeMange posted six kills and a .400 hitting percentage in game three while Hunkus, Moss and Norman added three kills apiece. Hausfeld had 15 assists and two blocks, Norman had four blocks and DeMange added six kills defensively. The Blue Devils hit .293 and held the Vols to a .077 hitting percentage in the third game.
Game four saw the Vols take an early 15-13 lead but a 7-3 Blue Devil run gave Duke a 20-18 advantage, forcing a Tennessee timeout. The Blue Devils pushed their lead to four points at 22-18 before a 4-0 Tennessee run tied the score at 22 all. The Vols were forced to use their second timeout of the game after a 4-3 Duke run gave the Blue Devils a 26-25 advantage. Duke then used a 4-2 run to finish off the match with a 30-27 game three victory.
