CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Duke men's and women's cross country teams competed in the 2006 ACC Cross Country Championship on Saturday, held at Panorama Farms, with the women's team placing second and the men's team placing fourth.
The women's race featured six top-30 teams, as No. 16 Duke finished in second place with 88 points behind No. 8 N.C. State, which tallied 59 points. Crossing the finish line first for the Blue Devils was senior Emily McCabe, who finished the 6K run in 21:09.30. Sophomore Maddie McKeever provided a solid finish, placing seventh in 21:21.70, as McCabe and she proved once again to be a strong one-two punch for the Blue Devils. Both received All-ACC honors for their outstanding performances.
The Blue Devil men competed in a league championship race that included three top-30 squads, finishing in fourth place with 124 points, improving upon last year's fifth-place showing. N.C. State finished first with 31 points, while Florida State took second with 79 points and Virginia took third with 87 points.
Senior captain Keith Krieger and junior captain Chris Spooner were the first two Blue Devils to cross the finish line, as Krieger finished first for the Blue Devils, finishing the 8K race in 24:41.50 to place 11th, and Spooner placed 17th with a time of 24:58.80. Krieger was named All-ACC for his efforts.
“We're very pleased with the men's effort today“ said Duke head coach Norm Ogilvie. “We significantly closed the gap on Virginia, which is a team we'll have to beat in two weeks to make the NCAA Championships. The guys really stepped up and ran well today.”
By finishing before North Carolina in both races today, the men's and women's cross country teams boost Duke's lead in the Carlyle Cup to 3.5-1. The Carlyle Cup is a yearlong competition between the Blue Devils and the Tar Heels sponsored by Carlyle & Co. of Greensboro, N.C. Winning points for Duke this season in addition to both cross country teams, were field hockey, men's soccer and volleyball.
Duke will travel to Raleigh, N.C. next Saturday before heading to the NCAA Southeast Regional, held in Louisville, Ky. on Nov. 11.
